Just don't lite up Scrakes and Flewshpounds on fire or everyone will hate you.
Or Medic.
do not recommend survival for beginner since its a hybrid of the other classes
Also, certain perks have good synergy with each other, with headshotty ballistic perks (commando, swat, sharpshooter, gunslinger) on one side, and spammy, aoe perks (firebug, berserker, demo, to generalise) on the other. Support works well with both types of teams, doing good damage whether going for headshots or body damage, whereas say, going firebug may piss off certain teammates.
And if that so happens to be Survivalist, so be it. People just don't like it because it's not the Martial Artist skill literally everybody thought/hoped it was going to be.
And if you pefer efficiency or fun.
I think every perk is suited for beginners except for Sharpshooter and Gunslinger.
They have the highest skill ceiling of all and constantly require precise aiming which can be stressful for beginners in a PvE horde game with all the hurly-burly going on around you.
People don't like it because it sucks and is uninspired. Not because it's not martial artist.
Anyways OP, indeed you shouldn't play survivalist. But not because it sucks. But because it demands an understanding of the game which requires much more knowledge and experience.
Using it now, you'll just use random weapons without fully understanding their potential.
Gunslinger should be one of the last classes that you pick, something to strive for in the last few classes - it requires pixel perfect aiming. I started playing that when I got bored of the game ( play Gunslinger after mastering Sharpshooter ).
Easy classes: Firebug, SWAT, Demolition
Slightly more difficult: Support, Sharpshooter, Commando
Firebug is easy mode. SWAT specializes in fast firing sub machine guns, close quarters combat. Most SWAT weapons have red dot holo scopes, which makes aiming easy peasy.
Demo nukes with area affect weapons ( rocket propelled grenades ).
Support is better as a third class ( specializes in shotguns and with a 20 weight restriction, can carry off perk healing weapons and C4 which is a demolition weapon ). Support can be played as a hybrid class, that's why it's better as a later class. Shotguns are great niche weapons, since they one-shot Gores ( the dudes with blades for arms ). If you like being a sniper, you might enjoy Sharpshooter.
Commando is unique in that it can see the enemy hit points ( it also provides vision to the team, in a small radius, to see invisible creatures ). I always found Commando and Support difficult in wave 1 because they are both ammo screwed ( Commando is a couple of magazines short ). After mastering Gunslinger, Commando isn't a problem any more ( I can hip fire - headshot with the default 9mm pistol more effectively ) but I always run out of shotgun shells in wave 1 for Support.
If you like melee, berserker ( I find berserker terribly boring ). If you like healing, medic.
