Its better in almost every way, there are some annoyances but if you can get over with, you will have the best survival shooter game
I favor KF2 more because it has more content and quality of life improvements.
What I like from KF1 that is missing in KF2 is the heavy reliance on a balance team composition and good teamwork.
Personally I prefer KF1 just because it portrayed the desperate "brink of human extinction" vibe better. Used to also prefer it because of a better spawn system until I came back to it some time ago and had a FP spawn between me and a corner.
KF1
- Harder challenge. So more fun to overcome.
- More skillful gameplay options.
- Better maps. If not as well designed as those in KF2.
- Better post-vanilla options. The argument for more content & qol improvements goes to KF1 if you include the modded servers which provided a longevity Ive yet to see in KF2.
KF2
- Better visually.
- A lot more vanilla content but bc its an easier game to overcome, less desire to keep playing after a certain point.
- Cosmetics. If youre into that sort of thing.
- Extra enemies. Providing a more varied challenge.
Those are the things that spring to mind for me.
I enjoy both games. Have put more hours into KF2 but thats bc I only got into KF1 years after release.
Also, I liked that the perk abilities in KF1 are not so gimmicky as they are in KF2. A lot of KF2 perk abilities are over powered.
When it comes to atmosphere and overall tone of the game - KF1 feels like an old horror movie and KF2 feels like a modern action movie. New atmosphere is not necessarily worse, it's just different. Both games are selling their own atmosphere well enough. so it's a draw. Though, i'd like "action" to complement the "horror", not to replace it. At this point KF1 is slightly closer to me.
But there are things KF2 took a turn in a really wrong direction with - microtransactions, lootboxes and cosmetics. It turns a game into a cheesfest. Tasteless and outright stupid cosmetics. "Give me your money" lootbox system in the best traditions of gambling establishment, which is not even that rewarding, because 90% of the cosmetics look like they made for four years olds. On crack. I really don't feel all of this belongs to Killing Floor universe. It would be acceptable somehere else, if done right, but not here.
I'm also a bit conflicted with their decision to stray into sci-fi territory that far. IMO KF is at it's best with modern day technology, but slightly more advanced tech for "Horzine".
Obviously KF2 is a latest, more high quality product and there is little reason to go back to KF (unless nostalgia), because it's kind of an old game which didn't age well.
BUT, if there only could exist a Killing Floor game with a technical aspect as good as KF2, but which stayed true to KF1 original routes (without all the corporative, consumer oriented ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and drastic atmosphere changes), I'd gladly drop KF2 and never went back to it.
They got a ton of them including weapon packs before they started in KF2.
Still KF2 has got its own flaws as well but overall a massive improvement over the original.
The bosses in KF1 compared to 2 were different, mainly that 2 has more bosses to face but also their behaviour. In the KF1 you could easily kill a boss just with C4/explosives. When the boss wave came all you would do was give your friend who was the demo all the cash and he would rapidly buy explosives and place them in a pile next to the trader/outside it. When the boss came you just stepped over them and stood behind them and waited, the boss would be killed instantly.
Although the KF1 had community polls. A vast majority of the votes came as DLC. The game has so much DLC, about 50% of the weapons, most likely more are behind a pay wall. KF1 did seem to have more interesting characters such as the queen's guard and so on. With KF2 there may be less characters but at least all weapon updates (Minus late 2019) were free (with the exception of the 4 packs that came out having weapons in them)
KF1 did also have a much larger map selection, KF2 is slowly catching up but with maps seem to only come each holiday.
I do however prefer KF2, it may lack content in some areas but the level system re-work did get me to enjoy the game more. I am able to complete a tree and prestige and that really does make me enjoy the game more.
