I always use bone crusher when playing as a tank berserker in a team because of the damage reduction and the fact that it has very high chance of knockdown ontop of using massacre to increase the rate of knockdowns due to faster attack speed. This makes it the best melee to use when you are frontlining.
If you are however more of the solo type of player then I suggest using zweihander over any other melee weapon due to the combo potential that you can pull of with it. Dont want to combo? Then use the battle axe! (Katana for trash if playing with zwei or battleaxe)
but the rest i agree
it's i think also the only weapon that can block rockets and husk cannon blasts (without dying lol).
IT's insanely good if you wanna be the team's tank. As the guy above said. Going all L with the exception of masscare for smash, is extremely useful. You can use it to clear trash or smash to stun/stumble big zeds (but massacre works better since your role would be tank not big zed killer).
Also has one of the most noteable and best looking skins since it has such a high surface area and is a vertially positioned shield for all to see.
The only real downside i can say is that it doesn't do much damage vs. other weapon or stun as well (Static strikers and the eviscerator or battleaxe would be much better for that).
to elaborate:
-SS (static strikers)=better for taking on big zeds and on-demand stunning via emp nade effects. On bosses, especially patty and hanz it's very VERY useful to stop them from running away or from trying to target other players. Decent block.
-eviscerator=mult-kill, penetration, reuseable/pickable saw blades, and good/decent block. Only downside is running out of ammo on the sawblades and fuel tank. Best carry a katana or crovel for when and if this happens.
-battle axe=good for big zeds and damage. Great for clearing lanes too. Bad at clearing trash for slow speed unless they're grouped up.
-bone crusher=good for listed above tank zerker. Suffers from damage but your role as a tank is blocking/stalling not dealing with bigger zeds
-pulverizer=good for clearing zeds around you with a husk-like dedonation but with explosive pellets. Bad at decaps b/c it would only stumble zeds/knock em down.
-zweilhander=best for clearing lanes of trash zeds. Slow attack but big range (on par with the battle axe but i think slightly more).
-katana=best for clearing trash and slashing. Bad for tanking compared to the bone crusher
-fireaxe=good for stunning not as good as the SS but compared to the price it's a bargin. Best to pick off medium targets with m2 and trash with m1
-nailgun=good for leeching off zed health in hoardes but it's rather quaint unless you max it out
-crovel=best for starting. Bad at blocking compared to others but strong enough to decap a rioter/gorefast/bloat early waves.
as for team settings, I always go RLRLR if i'm in a full man match if playing on Normal and Hard and helping out some low-level guys. but if i'm playing on Suicidal or Hell-on-Earth, i'll swap out "Parry" for "Resistance", and that's mainly due to the numerous Bloats and Sirens that'll spawn more frequently
well the thing that brings down both the Battle Axe and the Zweihander (i've tried them both), is the slow swing speed. true I could use the "Massacre" skill to buff the swing speed by 5%, but one may not see much of a difference (which explains why I use "Smash" when using the Bone Crusher to stun-lock and decapitate Zeds with constant blows and shield bashes to the head)
RRRLR is the optimal for zwei and battleaxe.
Jab (Shield Bash)
...as soon as the hitbox comes out...
Left directional heavy attack (Shield swipe)
...repeat.
Jab, heavy left swipe, jab, heavy left swipe, etc.
Heavy attacks with strong knockdown potential. The jab is accurate for headshots, and the swipe clears out waves of small zeds. If executed well, this combo swings almost as fast as a regular light attack string, but is a lot more powerful.
The gimmick of blocking rockets/husk attacks with the bone crusher isn't that good. You still take a ton of damage, especially since the rockets often don't hit directly on the shield so you take a ton of splash damage, which can still kill you. Most of the time you're better off dodging/running away from the rockets/fireball.
The battle axe has more utility at higher perk levels when you can take advantage of the increased attack speed.
