You could bash mid-reload and shoot instant later. Now you can't shoot when you bash, you need to complete the entire animation.

Ok. I get it. So it was cheating

wasn't really cheating, at all. from what Max described, it was more of an exploit (since it was part of the game's mechanics)

It was a bug, which everyone exploited. Now it was somewhat fixed.

You can still reload cancel by holding LMB while doing reload, then melee bash once your ammo counter goes back to full.

What comes to my mind when hearing about this is the gunslinger. When using akimbo pistols, you used to bash when you only had 1 pistol loaded to shoot and you get full ammo as you had already fully reloaded both pistols? That is not how it works in real life. You acttually have to reload both guns to get magazines in both guns, if you were using 2 guns at the same time. Plus, you called it an "exploit".

It's still the same for some weapons thought, like the Gunslinger and Commando ones.

Good to know. I only tried the medic pistol, 9mm and gunslinger tier1 duals.

I´m sorry but this sounds OP. Never heard of it before. Is it possible to do in any other FPS?

In quite a few games you can skip the last part of a reload and save maybe .1 of a second. It's quite a common trick in most FPS games such as Counterstrike, where your gun is reloaded before the animation ends, so you switch to a different gun and switch back because the draw animation is usually faster than finishing the reload.
