Custom maps fail to download.
This has been ongoing for (years?) . Wondering what specifically is the cause of this is? I'm assuming it has something to do with the map not being updated to the game's current version. ie. version mismatch or something. It's annoying when 6 (or more) players are voting for a new map after a really good game and then everyone gets kicked to the main menu because the map didn't get distributed to everyone.

If everyone gets disconnected after voting a custom map, the server admin didn't install the custom map correctly. Or the map was updated or removed from the workshop and the server has not updated the map yet.

Mismatch error means the file you have installed on the server does not match the file from the location it downloads from.

Error opening file could mean different things:

1. The map file is installed correctly but the server fails to fetch the file from the location (like a map redirect)

2. The map file is missing an additional .upk file to load properly.

3. Something else wrong with the .kfm map file.
Hmm interesting, thanks for the info. Seems like there's a large margin for error with all of that. Sounds like the process needs to be simplified somehow.
version mismatches can happen when the map author updates their map
the workshop file updates but the file on the server doesnt

its quite annoying for people that host the servers as well as players like you said.

If the server is setup correctly it should auto update any workshop files. I think the issue is client side. Cause the player may not have the map subscribed in workshop.
i run a server, its not that simple
when a map is updated. most often than not i get the mismatch error

i have to delete the file from server cache directorys and also manually download a specific workshop file, open it with notepad++ and delete the map file name and then reupload the file

only then will the workshop update the map on my server

bit of a hassle
Close steam client and launch server then workshop custom maps will update.

Players don't have to subscribe to a map on the workshop prior to joining a server with a custom map. If they do, it just makes connecting to server a lot faster since the map is already downloaded ahead of time.
Yes. But when the client is not subscribed, and server file is updated that's when you get the mismatch. If client is subscibed then they auto get the update. If client not subscribed the server just sees a difference and gives mismatch errors.
Then the client needs to delete the cache files and reconnect.

Same here, man. There's alot of solid custom maps i'd like to keep playing but as far as I know they still don't work. Like CarillonHamlet, DeathSentence, or DeadShore.

Mismatch is a server problem in 95% most cases.

Edit: Mismatch can occur client side but it's not as likely.
