Fanfire allows you to swiftly dispatch a Fleshpound or Scrake close enough to allow you to ammo dump headshots onto their head.
Disclaimer: I do not claim to be an expert in the Gunslinger perk however I have tried it out on various occasions on HoE and this are from my personal experience.
Point to note however is that if you do not land headshots frequently, you would find yourself running out of ammo extremely quickly.
A full Double Magnum is more than enough to deal with all Scrakes/Fleshpounds that do spawn provided you use Rack Em Up and land headshots frequently. That being said you would still have Double DE and Double M411 for Small - Medium zeds who usually go down in 1 or 2 shots depending on whether you have any REU counts.
Overall I would say it is a punishing class if you do not land headshots well.
I always pick whirlwind of lead when there is a good commando. But I mainly play controlled difficulty so ammo is a bigger problem than on hoe
since gunslinger can kill FP and SC in short time
I think I should pick Whirlwind of Lead in normal wave
but how about boss wave?
