The side of the space carrier had better texture detail in the original than the one in the remaster. That’s… huh.

I think adding enhanced version and keep original version was great move well now we got support for controllers which is great for Steam Deck users (I personaly played Quake 1 on deck and its amazing)

Not as much of a difference in textures as I would've liked - that's really my only complaint. It could be just my hazy memory, but I felt like Q1 difference between original and remaster was more noticeable (and not just because of the lower quality of Q1 assets).

Also, I don't know why texture smoothing is on by default, when it only makes textures more blurry.

Q1 WAS more noticeable, because they never released a working GL version and the graphics were broken. Not even the source ports fixed everything, like vis patches. The game did not have native colored lighting, unlike quake2. The Quake2 remaster just doesn't have the same improvements over the source material.

Q1 was designed as software only with monochrome lighting and no texture filtering/smoothing or transparent surfaces. OpenGL was added in the form of GLQuake and QuakeWorld after the game was finished. Quake 2 had GL as standard with colored lighting, bilinear filtering and transparency while using software mode as a fallback. That explains the smaller difference and why texture smoothing is on by default.
