Will there be dedicated servers?

I'm asking this, because there seems to be an epidemic of hosts quitting lobbies in the middle of a heated 16-player match, and it's honestly bull. Hope there will be dedicated servers to remedy this.

The original game had them as well, and were integral to the game's longevity, so please make this happen. Without them, the multiplayer scene for this won't last long. That said, this new port is great. Fixes a lot of my gripes with the original (like lack of muzzle flashes), and finally lets us play Quake 2 64 with M/KB controls and interpolated weapon anims (the original lacked this).

+1 for dedicated servers. Very disappointed they're not in here at launch.

+1. Can definitely imagine player pool dwindling if host players just grief and leave if games don't go their way.

+1 dedicated servers are especially needed to get mod authors motivated to update old Quake 2 mods over to the Quake 2 remaster (Action Quake 2 for instance, it would be nice to get the updated lightning & no more wobbly polygon-warping for the first person weapon models, like most Quake 2 engine games used to suffer from).

I may refund because there's no dedicated server support. This game will die off as quickly as it launched without them.

From discussions in the Night Dive discord, dedicated server support (headless) is on their to do list for a future patch. Highly doubt they ever read anything here on the Steam community forums. Not sure how many of you are on Discord, but head on over there and show your support for adding dedicated servers.

While I agree with the majority of you, you can't really have Quake or Quake 2 these days without dedicated server support. To appeal to the masses (consoles included) the current system works and was the easiest and cost effective to implement from a development perspective. From a hardcore Q2 player perspective, not so much, because you and I know that the longevity of the game thrives on having proper dedicated servers.

But let's be patient, its hopefully something that will get implemented eventually in the future :)

wow i didn't expect that, quake 2 servers can run on basically nothing hardware and it's super easy for them to set it up.

I seem to be getting kicked from lobbies and having servers abruptly shut down on me when I start to top frag in servers pretty much every time it happens.

Dedicated servers are a must if they want any sort of community to remain playing after the initial novelty of the remaster wears off.

still playing the classic (with q2pro client) on Playground.ru (only server that has players every day with a low ping). Tried the new one, but no dedicated servers except one, which uses fakeplayer hack , fooling everyone like 26/34 players , but when entering the server there are 3 players, bots or noone, That's a bummer. Quake 2 (especially Lithium) is my favourite game, so I was hoping that a new remake would make the multiplayer experience alive again (I dont care about single player missions in any game). I think it wont happen after all :/

(Tried Quake Live, but a default machinegun at spawn for everyone causes a headache, I hate that non-stop sound during gameplay, it spoils the experience, also tried Quake Champions but it has no server browser and after 1 match , it starts matchmaking again which takes forever. )
What were the developers thinking?

Thank god there is still Xonotic (free game like Unreal Tournament) and Battlefield series (I like 1,4 and V).

You can change the sort to ping.
