Someone told me the blurry textures came from "Texture smoothing"....no actually you are WRONG. Look how BAD these textures are in this "Remaster"...are you kidding me? Why didn't they just combine the two? Am I missing something???

I was there and had a Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo 1.
Q2 in 3D accelerated 640x480 was the sweet spot for me.

Q2RTX also looks pretty good at that rez too. Yeah, I'm weird.
I put over 100 hours into Quake 2 RTX on a base RTX 2060, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Still impressive. :gordon:

Nah, its pretty much what i wanted for an "Enhanced Edition", keep its original feeling and art direction without making it hideous to look at like the RTX tech demo.

Played than thing on a 3080 and aside the water effect (yeah it looked pretty, i'll take it) the whole thing looked like something made under 1.0 Unity where everything had that baseline look. I stopped playig after getting the railgun, that model was just awful. I never understood why they changed it.

There aint no way...look how crisp and high res the textures are in the RTX Build VS this build.

The game was made in the 90's and the remaster port's job IS TO PRESERVE THE ORIGINAL GAME

holy hell how are people this dense.

If you say that this version was made to preserve the original game... Why don't you play the original game that is also on STEAM??

It makes no sense to defend this version that should have included a high quality texture option.

Is there a texture mod for the enhanced version? I agree with OP, RTX version texture look better, it's almost like night and day.
I feel like I'm loosing brain cell every time I read and try to understand someone's rant about how Quake 2 RTX is so much better and how this re-release should look just like Q2RTX, and so on...

Seriously, does Q2RTX look pretty? Yes. Should Quake 2 look pretty? No.

First thing I've noticed when I saw Q2RTX screenshots for the first time was the chrome-like reflection on Supershotgun barrels, and my reaction was: What the ****? Why???
Second thing I've noticed was inconsistency in textures, like for example the stripped yellow lines that marks the trajectory of transport platforms.

In the original version, it slightly bends in, yet still noticeable to acknowledge potential hazard. I guess even Strogg care about work safety.
In Q2RTX, the lines are too clean, too vivid, look like freshly painted, which shouldn't be the case.
Strogg architecture was originally implied to be designed as everlasting industrial area with minimal necessity for maintenance, not one with constantly re-painted walls and markings, polishing metallic surface and stuff.

I'm not against higher resolution map textures, as I've mentioned elsewhere, it however must stay true to the original design of the game and certainly not making the game look like Q2RTX.
On a technical level the Quake 2 RTX build is impressive, sure. Artistically, though, it looks like garbage. I much prefer the look of Quake 2 Enhanced. Super high fidelity textures and things like RTX just don't mesh well with older, lower poly games like this.
I think Nightdive deliberately used lower textures in the remaster to preserve the classic look. Also. seeing the higher resolution textures on low-polygon models seems off. Feels like an uncanny valley effect, at least for me.
For enhanced models and Call of the Machine episode they certainly did so.
For base Quake 2 and original mission packs the textures are unchanged.
Exact same as the original release, even for maps with improved architecture.

Also as I mentioned earlier in other discussion, textures on enhanced models are good the way they are, but map textures could use double the resolution to match the resolution/level of detail of textures for 3D models.
