Where is the original?
I love the remaster of the game, but i can't find the original game's files. I can launch them from steam, but I can't find the files. I want to put the original game onto a flashdrive for travel, so I don't just want to play it from steam

The same where they always been, in the game folder.
New version is located in the "rerelease" subfolder.

In the case you didn't figure it out, if you start the game by clicking "Play" in your Library it will display options for launching the remaster, the original release, The Reckoning or Ground Zero (both in their original versions).

Damn, I honestly read a bunch of threads so fast the other night that I skipped that part entirely. My bad! 😅

Sadly I don't know how to help in this situation, but I hope you figure it out dots :)

Can you try this method How to download older versions of a game on Steam?
It should allow to download original files only.

Why would he do all that trouble. The original files are all still there. This was literally answered in the first comment of the thread. Rerelease does not overwrite the old files. He can just copy everything *except* the rerelease folder. I would just use those with a vanilla sourceport since the original exe has issues anyway.

For the testing purposes. And it is interesting to know does Steam allow to download and install only normal Quake 2.
It is not a big trouble, just one or few commands in Steam console.
