Quake 2 has a error message Quake2.exe has stopped working.
Any one know how to fix this issue or if there even is a fix. I am using a alienware 17 laptop with Windows 8 on it and my decktop is a slightly upgraded Dell XPS 8000 ( purchased a few years ago but still pretty new) and both systems for some reason cant play the steam downloaded quake. I could dig around in my old boxs and hope to find the old hard disk again but would be rather sad since I bougfht the quake bundle (quakes 1-3 with expantion packs included) and I cant play the one game I really want lol

Damm! It sounds like your computer is too new to handle Quake 2's 16 bit texture gameplay XD You'll have to download a source port to run the game, sadly :(

This makes no sense at all. Steam shouldn't be selling outdated software.
Moreover, id is asking for money for a game that won't work, and they dont have the decency to make the port themselves, instead you have to use the work of other people who aren't seeing a penny.
I hate that.

Same issue, however Quake 1 runs fine with 8.1. I bought the bundle and palyed it fine. Quake 2 just won't even start with the same {stopped working} Tried compatibility mode from xp through the rest. Did the verify files, no luck. It seems like the exe is the issue. Any ideas for success, besides saying get a better comp. It is a laptop as I've been out of town for close to 2 months now. Had to do some gaming for my fix so got this temp laptop, till I get back home. I will show specs with that steam thing that I can upload specs. It does seem to meet the specs on the steam store page though. Forgot to say tried the patch the guy suggested as well. Got it working with a mixture of changing some of my laptop config and I think that patch the guy gave the link to. Thanks to all!

Well I have a copy of Quake 2 that I got from a friend and was able to copy the exe file from the game program then deleted the steam file for quake 2 compleatly and made steam search for my file and add it to my libary. After that I was able to play and if you wanted the dlc files to work you need to transfer them from steams folder into the Quake 2 folder which it would boot from. Its a odd way around it but I am sure you can go and find some place where you can get a copy for free or cheap

That's what I did along with sutting down virus, and maleware, and other stuff running in the background. Still not sure if the 3.24 file the guy posted did anything? As it didn't work after extracting tha patch. However after doing the other stuff and a restart it worked. I figure it all helped and now I can play at least. Forgot how fun Q2 was after all these years! If I were home I have 3 copies of Quake2 one still sealed in the old big box{green} method they used to supply. Thanks to everyone who posted help here, still a great Quake community!!!!!
