Quake II v.3.24 makes a several good improvements for Vanilla Quake II without ruining it original charm. I'm playing now with it all mods what I wanted to replay once again. I'm sure it will work fine with mission packs.

Quake II Evolved was a nice port in 2000s for original single player. I'm not sure in what it "evolved" now xD.

KMQuake and BerserkerQ2. Can't say anything about them, I never play with HD-textures and I don't like "improved" lightning, so.

I don't exactly know which one is the best, but I do use KMQuake from the Ultimate Quake 2 Patch.

I also don't like HD graphics. I use Q2PRO port. I think it looks a lot like the original with slitghtly sharper graphics depending on your settings. It also has built in browser for multiplayer which is nice.

berserker is quite good.game looks incredible with right setting.it has plenty of modern features sadly doesnt work with expansions.km quake is more basic but works with expansions.

DirectQ in my opinion. DirectQ is what let me even start the game at all!

Definitely Quake2XP.

For single player experience, I'd say KMQuake 2 - it does have improved graphics but not so much as say Berserker. As to multiplayer - it has to be Q2Pro. Both engines are kept up to date, with fixes etc. However, Classic Quake 2 (v. 3.2) is the most stable on-line engine.

For multiplayer, definitely this is the thing to go, available for free, based on Quake2 demo extended with Q2PRO sourceport:

Q2PRO seems incompatible with Reckoning, Zaero and other expansion packs for Quake2 - save for the Ground Zero - but the multiplayer is shockingly vivid. Mind you can get to the multiplayer with the already mentioned quickstart, available for free.
