The Strogg are amazing game villains
Whether it was by accident on ID's side, or they just really got shooter villains right, strogg are my fav. Not just in gaming but all of sci fi. Yep, sure there's classic sci fi villains. Darth Vader, Borg, Alien, Terminator. But none of them to me are as nightmarish and demented as the strogg concept. I'm actually kinda new to the strogg, didn't play quake 2 till early 2010 era. Always was aware of the big chunky guys in unreal but I never actually knew the origins of that style. Besides quake1, was always more familiar with q1 than 2, cause I rented q1 a few times on n64. By the time they brought out q2 I'd already moved onto psx. Still played 64 and pc games but just never really looked into q2. So my experience with the concept of, assimilation aliens or ai was limited to xmens phalanax and startreks borg. And neither one were to impressive. Xmens version just basically jump on you and start infecting, borg they gotta catch and reprogram you, and even then its not like the madness strogg do. Hell big angle in star trek is you feel euphoria and pleasure just being a borg so that's completely different from being a hardwired pain slave like strogg.

So when I beat quake1 finally I wanted to play q2 so bought it on steam, but it needed a lot of workarounds, good thing for glquake2. But the strogg were completely different from what im use to. I've actually had nightmares about mass universal assimilation but not because of strogg just the concept. Actually seeing it done in such a bizarre way, well to me Q2 is one of the best shooter games to tap into horror. Real brutal horror, not just the atmosphere quake1 was. The concept of quake2 is extremely nightmarish, fever dream nightmarish and if anyone doesn't take strogg seriously they are just not using their imagination. Q2 was at a rough time for game storytelling. This is why I love Q4 so much we got to see a more realistic vision of quake2 and it was a great game. Far better than I expected, would love to see more quake games expanding on the strogg lore. In some ways as much as I love q1 and I actually like it more than q2. Q2 is the one that, least imo took the quake franchise and really kept it for themselves. Its just a genius enemy, one that was imo way more frightening than demons or cthulu guys. I mean being forced into slavery and mutilation that's some wicked stuff. Incredibly gripping nightmare fuel. I love it from a horror/shooter perspective probably the best. Love fear too, but I think stroggs way more creepy.

I mean the steam version before the remaster update never could get it to work right.

So people who like Stroggs actually exists. Yeah, they are cyborgs. It was kinda trendy in the 90´s. I think Quake 2 is inferior to Quake 1 in every shape and form. Factorys and warehouses isnt creepy or scary. Especially not 90´s cyborgs even with bodyhorror elements.

Strogg intro screen theme plays as you enter the gates.

Quake II was a product of the mid 1990's with a lot of Sci-fi shows and films such as Star Trek the Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Star Gate and Babylon 5, Space Above and Beyond and Starship Troopers still running and fresh in peoples mind. I was addicted to games like Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Quake II and Half-Life. The remasters really have brought a new lease of live in these these games, which are 30 years old.

I was a huge fan of ds9 but the Borg never struck me as nightmarish as strogg. I always liked the dominion more in ST was an interesting idea.

Games from that time tend to give enemies that are corrupted humans like Duke's pig cops, Half Life's zombies, Quake grunts or enforcers but most of stroggs army are made up of them.

Although Quake II is not trully a sequel to OG Quake with it's "Lovecraft" themes and ventured into a purely Sci-Fi setting, I agree that the Strogg are great enemies.

A grotesque mix of flesh and machine, and alien and hostile in nature.

If OG Quake was composed of dark medieval fantasy monstrosities (besides some space bases here and there - usually as starting levels in the various episodes), Quake II went for that sort of Sci-Fi horror vibe, much like Star Trek's Borg, The Terminator, Aliens and Starship Troopers.

Quake 4 acts as a "pretty good" successor to Quake II, but it would be nice to see some new title to continue the Strogg-lore of the Quake games, whatever it would be (Quake Wars 2?).

Man they really do need to bring quake wars to pc. I know it was mostly online play, but I heard there was still a campaign in there.

I can definetely understand. Strogg remind me of every kid's cheap action figures, everyone got, but nobody ever knew what those actualy were. Just a random monster-cyborg-soldier type of figure^^. I feel like this is exactly what makes it so easy to relate to the theme for me.

Yea but once you look into who they really are turns into nightmare fuel, but I guess all twisted warped monsters do. I guess TMNT would be very horrifying from a realistic standpoint.

The chances are probably slim looking at how they killed-off the servers for that game and id already has another "MP-only" modern Quake title (Quake Champions), but I agree that an updated and re-released version of Quake Wars would be cool.

I know the remasters of Quake/Quake II certainly brought a new lease of life to these games (they certainly did for me). However even before I had a tenancy to get nostalgia every couples of years and play them. I never played Quake III or Quake Wars, hell I only played Quake IV about 10 years ago and while a good game, it never got me addicted to the way Quake/Quake II did back in day. I think I have installed Quake IV about twice. To me it feels very Doom III.

I am not sure about a reboot, does it need it. Why no just another game? Quake V? It would be nice to go back to the Medieval Gothic aesthetics as that has not been done in nearly 30 years.

Quake1 is my fav quake. Amazing atmosphere, altho for me at least strogg are way more original enemies than Lovecraft again. Hell Lovecraft was ripping off the Bible, and pretty much every other early myth story. Strogg did rip off Borg in a way, but they made it much more horrifying and industrial. Quake2 was actually going to be its own game, the quake title is very loose with q2 as quake or any sorcerer is not a factor. Not until call of the machine anyway. Which was built up in dimensions.

I like the connection, it still roots strogg as evil, but gives them an ancient source. Also a reason to hate humanity as ranger messed them up.

Plus who the hell were those gagging soldiers? I think they were clinging to life, through machines, or dark gods. Once ranger killed the dark gods they must of turned to technology and hatred for humanity. Just my theory.
