One is that the Strogg are leftover supersoldiers from a major galactic war, the other that Earth was a strategic position that would have allowed the Strogg to launch attacks at other civilizations. Neither is touched on again in the game.
There are a few enemies in Quake 4 that look unambiguously alien, like hover tanks, the stroyent processing creature, and the Makron himself. That said, what they look like and how they kill you are the only things we can say for certain about these creatures.
It wouldn't be out-of-character for the Strogg to have a bioengineering program that creates, grows, and modifies creatures for specific purposes. Stroyent is already a major feature of biotechnology, so the Strogg clearly have the will and the means to do so. With that said, this is all still totally conjecture.
Quake Wars is the earliest point in the timeline in which we see the Strogg. Given that Quake Wars portrays the Strogg as utilizing humanoid creatures as their basis - with no exceptions whatsoever - my assumption is that the Strogg were a humanoid species before they progressed into the present-day cyber-horrors.
I do hope id do Quake V and give us something new, it's been 18 years.
I know it’s a space drama/comedy but the Orville had an interesting take on the kalon. No bio anything just a pure ai and their only objective was to destroy us. That could also be possible to me.
what would be really cool, would be to see id do something completely new, again. quake 1 had lovecraftian things, 2 and all the others had strogg, so why couldn't the next one be something else entirely? sure there could be hints of some kind of link but i don't want another game full of damn strogg, they look utterly stupid. they need to do something more alien.
i'd really like to see id do stuff with alien beings that aren't even humanoid, things with weird body shapes like big bugs, amoebas, snakes, i don't know man, why does every damn alien have to be shaped like a human in sci fi? it's STUPID. i'm sick of it. i want something NEW
I think the Borg was a strong influence. At the time of development of Quake II (1996/1997) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine /Voyager, Space Above and Beyond and Lex were the main Sci-fi on air.
I think the problem they have is that people will expect something new and ground breaking like they did with Quake and Quake III. Doing anything 'new' in a FTP game is very hard as almost everything has been done now. Perhaps a VR FTP which doesn't create any motion sickness might be the only 'new' thing they can really do. Quake II was great but it was nothing ground breaking unlike Quake.
I think the whole Gothic/Lovecraftian influence in Quake was due to John Romero who is a bit of a Goth and when he left it was never in the game again. Now that almost all the original Quake, Quake II, Quake III and Quake IV teams have left, it might be something id can look into again.
Well the new episode 'Call of the Machine' indicates that the Strogg were created by inter dimensional shamblers under the influence of Shub Niggurath. Whether the Strogg were created by something else entirely explains exchanged technologies with these dimensional creatures i.e Ogres with grenade launchers and further in more mechanical forms like the Armaggon and crates littered around the Quake levels.
Or I might just be thinking too much into it and leave them as kick ass enemies.
Hell they cut the fantastic raised by wolves after 2 seasons. Show also had some great atmosphere.
or
using alien cyborgs wasnt a good choice for defeating humans. maybe cyborg humans were a better much for fighting humanity.
a giant alien cyborg maybe would be too slow to fight human soldiers, maybe inneficient.
Its similar to how the combine started using combine soldiers after the war instead of synths.
combine soldiers were cheaper and more efficient for human to human warfare.
in quake 4 the strogg switch tactics mid game and start using literal weapon carring humans (tacticals) instead of berserkers and gladiators to fight humans, because these are the best match to fight humans.
As for Quake II being different it's now a known story, I'm not sure if it's true, but developers stated they couldn't settle on a cool name so they went with Quake 2, where in reality it has nothing to do with Quake 1.
I have changed my opinions, I don't think strogg care about other aliens. I think the beef with humanity is personal.
Gila why are you so against this game having any kind of story or lore? Even doom and wolfenstein have lore. They wrote about dudes collecting suns like toy cars. They had bedrooms and even a shower room in to deep. If they didn't have a fleshed out story before its obvious they are trying to connect it now.
Man you guys love killing imagination. That would be a seriously bad idea considering the machine games are awesome.
