Getting the Remaster from Original CD-ROM
I've got my 1998 copy of Quake II and can't seem to get Steam or GOG to recognize the install from it in a way that allows me access to the remaster. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks. BTW, you won't "access" the remaster with this version. To get it, you have to buy it, there's no way around it.

Not baffling at all. This version has new content, and remastered on every aspect, a lot of work was done. It was free for owners of the original on Steam, which is very generous of them.

The RTX version is entirely free on Steam. If I'm remembering right, you need to copy the game files into it to be able to play the full game through it. Otherwise, it only contains the first episode.
This remaster is different, though. A lot is changed so it's not something they can supply for free and let people put the original files in it. The best they can do, outside of just making the whole game free and never selling it again, is to update the game to the remaster on the only currently supported platforms. It's a shame that owners of original copies don't get it for free, but I don't think there's much they can do about it.
I'd still say it's worth the 10 bucks for a good remaster with tons of extra content anyway. Most remasters cost considerably more than that.

Try entering the CD key into Steam or GOG. That used to work back in the day.

This. I got a copy of the original Prey to activate on Steam years ago... and the game was delisted at the time.

I think you click on the 'Games' tab at the top of Steam, click on 'Activate a Product on Steam' then click through until it asks you for a code. Enter your CD Key off your jewel case and cross your fingers.

ah, i very much wish i still had the original jewel case. i'm lucky my battered copy still installs at all, and i've been trying without luck to find the .reg file in the game files that might have the CD key. i'll probably just pay the $10, i have deep nostalgia for the original and will happily put some money towards what looks like a worthy remaster.

i was just confused for a bit because the articles i read about the remaster weren't specific and simply said "free for those who already own the game" so i thought i was missing something. thanks for y'alls responses!

I thought using the CD key was a great idea until I pulled out my Quake II CD-ROM from 1997 (in the jewel case) and it doesn't appear to have any such thing, just ISBN and UPC. I also was playing the RTX edition using this. I'm wondering if the RTX edition is better than the remaster, probably not. I will just have to pay to find out I guess.
Quake and Quake II don't use CD keys. Same for Doom and Doom II. Quake III, 4, and Doom 3 do.

It's worth buying the remaster. The RTX version is more of a tech demo.
