Q2 Crash: ERROR_DEVICE_LOST
Q2 frequently crashes on startp with an error referencing a file under C:\Jenkins\workspace...(which doesn't exist) called rhiqueryVK.cpp. This crash also frequently completely crashes Steam, sometimes it doesn't. If I try again right after, it usually loads fine and everything works.

I've tried verifiying files and even uninstalling and reinstalling Q2 but the problem persists. Is this happening to anyone else?

Could be overclocking, overheating, faulty hardware.

I had same crashes but it felt as random as possible, on launch day i have not crashed once and i was booting up the game multiple times but few days later on fresh pc login i suddenly got like 5 of these startup crashes in a row with same error code as you

Its definitely a network issue Quake 2 classic works fine just the remaster is crashing.

Dunno about network. I finished Q2, Q2 64 singleplayer campaigns, almost done with Q2 Reckoning and so far had no crashes at all.

I have total of 18 hours playtime and i had that crash once during middle of singleplayer play.

I have not once crashed in game. Once started, everything is rock solid. The error only happens on launch.

Part of the path of the file error references vulkan, is there a way to force d3d?

I believe you can use steam launch command "+r_rhirenderfamily d3d11" to launch the game in directx api instead, its in Quake II properties when you navigate your steam library

I would recommend anyone with nvidia GPU to DDU their driver and clean install the latest 536.99

also, change this setting in nvidia control panel: vulkan/openGL present method as "prefer layered on DXGI swapchain", which also makes NIS and freesync work as well, incidentally

Looks like forcing d3d fixed my issue. I do have an nvidia gpu so ill update my drivers, set the setting you reference and then try vulkan again and see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice.
