Level Editing
Hello,

Well 20 years ago I was making Quake/Quake II levels using Worldcraft. Thinking of getting back into it. What's the best editor to use currently as I know Value pretty much took over Worldcraft and it seems mostly geared up for Half-Life and left 4 Dead. Whats the best resources?

Thanks

Worldcraft, Arghrad.

I would suggest that you get Trench Broom. check it out here: https://kristianduske.com/trenchbroom/

OP, WorldCraft and Hammer are separate entities entirely. While Valve did take their version in a further direction for GoldSRC WorldCraft remains quite the apt tool for Quake engine games thanks to the flexibility of FGD files.

I've generally used QERadiant (I still keep an old version with some modifications) but it isn't particularly new user friendly. GTKRadiant is the latest version with Quake 2 support IIRC.

A popular alternative was QuArK but I've not touch that in years so out of touch. Trenchbroom is pretty good for speed developing levels and very good at certain things like terrain but I prefer the workflow of QERadiant personally.

I compile the level externally using a batch file using

Arghrad Version 3
gddqvis3 version 103
kmqbsp version 113d

VIS http://home.insightbb.com/~gryndehl/q2compile/quake2.html
BSP http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/
RAD https://www.bspquakeeditor.com/downloads.php

I think that gives the broadest combination of features and compatibility of any of the modified compiler tools out there. I can provide command line examples if requested for how to use them.

Thanks for the replies. I have started trying out Jack, which seems to work for both Quake and Quake 2. its very much like Worldcraft/Hammer, which is what I am used to. One thing however is getting the textures for all Quake II in jack seems a nightmare and very little user support.

I'd say it's about as tricky as FINDING some of those old texture sets. X3

EDIT: Speaking of which it had been so long since II reinstalled Quake2, I forgot my old WorldCraft installer is one of those pesky 16 bit ones. I'm not asking for the full registered one, The demo would do but does anyone have a directory mirror of that unzipped somewhere?

(Always wanted to get back to working on some of my old maps a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSfdF3cLkQo )

Seems to me more people make levels for Quake then Quake II. I quite like idea of doing both to be honest. Loads of Quake Textures floating about but very little from Quake II but maybe Quake is nostalgic for more people? I loved both games and was addicted to them. Scary this is all over 20 years ago!

Oh there's tonnes of Levels out there for Quake2. The trick is these days a lot of those sites that hosted the files (Fileplanet, Quakeworld etc) all died ages ago and what files CAN be found are usually 16-bit installers which don't run on modern windows.

Been slowly recovering a lot of my old files and things I used to use but it's proving difficult!

Yes the resources were very good back then and I dare say for games like Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead are still decent (for now). If there was no Quake I would make levels for them. I would do Doom also but I hate the SnapMap element. All my files are long in the void from back then.
