Where does the music go?
I have tracks 2-21 for the game+mission packs and KM quake 2, but which tracks go where?

They need to be burned onto individual CD's for each game. The order is as follows

For Quake 2

1 - Data Track
2 - Operation Overlord
3 - Rage
4 - Kill Ratio
5 - March of the Stroggs
6 - The Underworld
7 - Quad Machine
8 - Big Gun
9 - Descent in to Cerberon
10 - Climb
11 - Showdown

For The Reckoning

1 - Data Track
2 - Descent into Cerberon
3 - Gravity Well
4 - Counter Attack
5 - Quad Machine
6 - Stealth Frag
7 - Operation Overlord
8 - Crashed Up Again
9 - Kill Ratio
10 - Rage
11 - Adrenaline Junkie

For Ground Zero

1 - Data Track
2 - ETF
3 - Gravity Well
4 - Counter Attack
5 - Crashed Up Again
6 - Stealth Frag
7 - Complex 13
8 - Adrenaline Junkie
9 - Pressure Point 1
10 - Pressure Point 2
11 - Ground Zero

Note that you can burn each CD as audio only without a data track present and the game should pick up the correct music track. You'll know if it's correct by loading up Quake 2 and starting a new game. Descent into Cerberon should play for the first level.

The instructions should be on the documentations in KMquake2 files, but they are put in the baseq2/music folder, files have to be renamed from track02.ogg to 02.ogg until 11

For the expansion pack missions you have to create a folder called music inside xatrix and rogue the tracks 12 to 21 have to be renamed to 02.ogg to 11.ogg, or to put simplier, the first half of the tracks goes to the baseq2 and the second half goes to xatrix and rogue music folder you have to create

Creating "music" folders would work for the sourceports such as Yamagi or KMQ2. For the vanilla Quake2, I think only the CD has a chance to work, as described by the Phoenix. What is the "data track"? I think I will burn a NIN soundtrack from the classic Quake as my Quake2 music if the solution happens to do the job.

On the original game CD that's where the game's installation data is located. A PC or modern CD player will differentiate between a CD Audio track and a data track. If you put the game CD into a very old CD music player and try to play Track 1 you'll hear hissing garbled noise because the CD player treats that track like any other music track.

Okay, but if I want to make myself a music CD for Quake2 gameplay, so that the game could read it and play it accordingly, what is that file supposed to be and contain?

If you're just making a music CD for the game then you don't need the data track. The game should read the first CD Audio track and treat it accordingly.

Great! I assume these can be any tracks in .OGG format?

Burned myself a classic Quake soundtrack audio CD and used it for Quake2, works great, installs very decent charm to the game. Thanks dudes, it works! It should be somewhere pinned, official how to bring music back to Quake2, next to the "quake2.EXE" which maybe we shall have, introducing the 16:9 screen resolutions. Then we will have vanilla like new.

EDIT:

I guess any ten-tracked audio CD would do, so you can run your imagination.

I used to use Hexen's soundtrack for Quake a long while back, with some tracks rearranged. It made the game feel very different.

Somewhere on the net I have also found a .BIN package, containing the classic Quake soundtrack, which works in a way that it mounts - via .CUE file - a virtual CD drive with contents adequate to those included in the mentioned .BIN file. Hard to tell though whether Quake2 would recognize it, would need to check out. The case with changing CD drive letters, as described under provided link, probably regards the case that Quake would read only the first - in alphabetical order - drive recognized as CD. If it worked, maybe it could be some solution to those without CD drive. Burning an audio CD seems more straightforward solution if available nonetheless.

Currently I play Painkiller: Black Edition game [retail version]. It has quite a big bank of musical themes in MP3 format. Wonder how would some ten of them do selected as background tracks for Quake2. Maybe later I will choose something and try it.

What music can you think of that would do for Quake2?
