Quake 1 vs Quake 2
I don't get it.. why is this called Quake? It has nothing to do with Quake 1. All the enemies are different, and even the basic level design is different.

Marketing movement. Explains a lot.

Not really. Your answer was very minimal. Did Quake 1 not perform well? Why did the enemies go from a gothic design to more of an alien design? Weapons are now on the right side of the screen rather than the center. Most weapons and even types were changed. No more zombies or floating ghouls.

Quake II was never meant to be a sequel to Quake. It had its own working name/title but there were issues with registered trademarks etc. with the name they were using at the time so they simply went with 'Quake II' when it came time to ship the game. Not sure when during development the namebissue came up but the game's original title was simply 'War'

Very cool, never knew that. Thanks for the answer! Gonna research it more, it's pretty interesting especially considering how small the industry was back then.

Wikipedia has more info but it's not very accurate believe it or not.

Nowhere there do they mention the issues with the original name they wanted but I think if you dig around the net a bit you can find info on that.

I wondered for a long time what the original working title name for the game was because every article only mentioned they couldn't get the rights to use the original name without actually stating what that name was lol. But I did find a reliable source that said it was in fact 'War'. I don't recall where I read that but I think it may have been in one of the devs .plan files or an older archived Quake II fan site.

The Strogg were infact present already in Quake 1 (look at the crates), they just dropped the Lovecraft-inspired fantasy stuff completely and went for Stroggs only. Also, Quake 2's movement and gameplay mechanics were emulated by a ton of other shooters that followed it, including proto military shooters. Quake 2's "Action Quake 2" mod is probably the main inspiration behind Counter-Strike.

At the time just being FPS in a limitedless 3D world was enough of a connection.

The naming thing threw me at the time as well. When Quake was first released I didn't like it. It may have been true 3D, but Doom was still too fresh in my mind. I discovered Quake 2 by accident when I realized I could not find my Spear of Destiny floppies and was wanting to play Spear again. So I bought a CD-Rom copy of Spear, and it had a demo of Quake 2 on it. I tried the demo. I loved it. I bought Quake 2, and loved it more. Over the years I have gained a grudging respect and admiration for Quake 1. I think it was too far ahead of my hardware when I first got it and source ports that remove that add interpolation to smooth out the model frames help tremendously.

So... yes. Id could have named Quake 2 something different and it would have been less confusing.

A. Final Fantasy series change story, world and characters in each chapter with a number, so I don't have the habit to think that the same name means direct sequel; sometime it means same studio, same type of gameplay, same spirit. And so I didn't ask myself that question; now I read you and I learn the title rights thing. It's interesting. So they couldn't use the title "war" and then maybe they choose the title of the game that is in a similar spirit;
on the other hand that title is also the one that could bring theme more popularity and money [marketing reason, as the first answer said].

B. I played Quake 1 until the start of episode 3. I enjoy it.
Now I'm playing Quake II and I found it very boring. I finished Unit 2. Do you think it's normal and that things are more interesting if I go on? Or there is nothing so new in the next units?
I found Doom and Quake 1 fast paced and funny, without story.
Quake 2 seems like a half way between them and Half Life but without managing to be one or the other genre. It's slow and looks like plastic; I know maybe it's strange but I like a lot Quake 1 and Half Life and I really wanted to like Quake 2 when I start. I hope that something will change going on.

Quake 1 instant weapon change p0wns! Quake 2 has one feature I wish Quake 1 had, being able to grab a quad damage and use it where you most need it. Many times there are quads in Quake 1 where you don't really need them.

I feel i had more fun w/ Quake 2 than with Quake 1.

Quake 1 felt off for some reason.

To me, Quake II is really just a upgraded GLQuake. It's the same engine, but improved with smooth interpolation, higher poly weapons and characters, coloured lighting, skyboxes, etc. Main difference is that they completely abandoned the fantasy medieval/magic stuff in favour of the Borg-like Stroggs and made levels segmented with partial nonlinearity to them but the trademark id cybernetic/gritty stuff is still there. Even weapons aren't all that dissimilar tbh. The single shotgun, double shotgun, grenade launcher and rocket launcher are still there, the nail gun and super nail gun were replaced with the machine gun and chaingun which act pretty much the same, the lighting gun was replaced with the rail gun, BFG is from Doom and the blaster pistol and hyperblaster are basically modified Doom pistol and plasma gun. What feels really different on QII is the pace and movement, as it's a lot slower and has more weight to it and there's recoil on some weapons. QII is slower but feels a bit more realistic in comparison to Q1, which is probably also why they made semi-realistic mods like Action Quake 2 for it which later inspired the likes of Counter-Strike. Quake III kept some of that weight feel from QII but sped up things a lot so it felt more like Q1. Interestingly, Doom 3 then again nerfed the speed a lot and felt super slow in comparison to the old Dooms and Q1 and QIII, but this was because they wanted a slower, scarier, survival horrorish game with a focus on single player. But Doom 3's MP feels too slow even for me, although I like the bit slower pace of QII.

Just to update my position, the third and fourth Units are better; there is something more to see (prisoners, blood, traps, new enemies..) and maybe i needed time to get used to the new gameplay.
Still I think Quake 1 is a different game but not worst.

yeah, I'm not a fan of quake 2 as well. I love quake 1 because of the strong lovecraft easthetics. I also don't like most maps in quake live as I don't want any space garbage, but gothic cathedrals etc.
Dont know if it was covered but the enemy in Quake 2 made an appearance in Quake along witb their logo and some of their shipping containers.

Realistically I never cared for Quake but Quake 2 was amazing. Level design and way it told the story without really telling the story.
