Not really. Your answer was very minimal. Did Quake 1 not perform well? Why did the enemies go from a gothic design to more of an alien design? Weapons are now on the right side of the screen rather than the center. Most weapons and even types were changed. No more zombies or floating ghouls.
Very cool, never knew that. Thanks for the answer! Gonna research it more, it's pretty interesting especially considering how small the industry was back then.
Wikipedia has more info but it's not very accurate believe it or not.

Nowhere there do they mention the issues with the original name they wanted but I think if you dig around the net a bit you can find info on that.
I wondered for a long time what the original working title name for the game was because every article only mentioned they couldn't get the rights to use the original name without actually stating what that name was lol. But I did find a reliable source that said it was in fact 'War'. I don't recall where I read that but I think it may have been in one of the devs .plan files or an older archived Quake II fan site.
So... yes. Id could have named Quake 2 something different and it would have been less confusing.
A. Final Fantasy series change story, world and characters in each chapter with a number, so I don't have the habit to think that the same name means direct sequel; sometime it means same studio, same type of gameplay, same spirit. And so I didn't ask myself that question; now I read you and I learn the title rights thing. It's interesting. So they couldn't use the title "war" and then maybe they choose the title of the game that is in a similar spirit;
on the other hand that title is also the one that could bring theme more popularity and money [marketing reason, as the first answer said].
B. I played Quake 1 until the start of episode 3. I enjoy it.
Now I'm playing Quake II and I found it very boring. I finished Unit 2. Do you think it's normal and that things are more interesting if I go on? Or there is nothing so new in the next units?
I found Doom and Quake 1 fast paced and funny, without story.
Quake 2 seems like a half way between them and Half Life but without managing to be one or the other genre. It's slow and looks like plastic; I know maybe it's strange but I like a lot Quake 1 and Half Life and I really wanted to like Quake 2 when I start. I hope that something will change going on.
Quake 1 felt off for some reason.
To me, Quake II is really just a upgraded GLQuake. It's the same engine, but improved with smooth interpolation, higher poly weapons and characters, coloured lighting, skyboxes, etc. Main difference is that they completely abandoned the fantasy medieval/magic stuff in favour of the Borg-like Stroggs and made levels segmented with partial nonlinearity to them but the trademark id cybernetic/gritty stuff is still there. Even weapons aren't all that dissimilar tbh. The single shotgun, double shotgun, grenade launcher and rocket launcher are still there, the nail gun and super nail gun were replaced with the machine gun and chaingun which act pretty much the same, the lighting gun was replaced with the rail gun, BFG is from Doom and the blaster pistol and hyperblaster are basically modified Doom pistol and plasma gun. What feels really different on QII is the pace and movement, as it's a lot slower and has more weight to it and there's recoil on some weapons. QII is slower but feels a bit more realistic in comparison to Q1, which is probably also why they made semi-realistic mods like Action Quake 2 for it which later inspired the likes of Counter-Strike. Quake III kept some of that weight feel from QII but sped up things a lot so it felt more like Q1. Interestingly, Doom 3 then again nerfed the speed a lot and felt super slow in comparison to the old Dooms and Q1 and QIII, but this was because they wanted a slower, scarier, survival horrorish game with a focus on single player. But Doom 3's MP feels too slow even for me, although I like the bit slower pace of QII.
Still I think Quake 1 is a different game but not worst.
Realistically I never cared for Quake but Quake 2 was amazing. Level design and way it told the story without really telling the story.
