If you want an easy fix just use this source port:
https://www.yamagi.org/quake2 --direct download here[deponie.yamagi.org]
That vanilla patch you speak of removes the original gl render (ref_gl.dll file) and replaces it with a modified one which makes the game (colours) look very different. I would backup the original ref_gl.dll file and use it with that patch for a faithful vanilla look if you don't want to use a source port.

If I want developers to get their asses do their job, I don't care about morons like you who thinks a customer has to do everything himself for them.
Sure, but why selling it here then? For just easy money? But money means seller to do some job, not just ripping and uploading a partially-working game without even including a soundtrack. There's a lot of good examples of very old games being published today with some workaround to make it work.
That would be great!
