Quake 2 Yamagi port [Windows 10]
EDIT:

The instructions following regard Yamagi 6.0 release. By now there are newer releases of the port, as well as the installation process may have changed somewhat.

Hi,

can anyone instruct me on how to install a Yamagi patch on Windows 10 64 bit, since the instructions found on these pages are probably only good for Japanese users:

https://github.com/yquake2/yquake2#binary-package-from-your-linux-distribution-or-bsd-system

https://www.yamagi.org/quake2/

I have a Quake 2 non-STEAM version, added as a bonus to Quake 4 release.

I tried the Knightmare Quake 2 patch but it is just too baroque-ish to myself. Perhaps yet the version to choose for multiplayer.

Download the prebuilt windows binaries: https://deponie.yamagi.org/quake2/windows/quake2-6.00.zip

And extract to your Quake 2 folder overwriting all existing files. Worked for me.

And if you need the music: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7y2pz54kmxrqdyt/q2music.zip?dl=0

Thanks for response. I have been around it for the last couple of hours and finally came to how to make it go, since even though all the files are at hand, switching between different sites is necessary with downloads unnecessarily grouped in bundles.

Here is what I did:

Installed my Quake 2 version with expansion packs, all added to the Quake 4 CD purchase as bonus contents. Actually, if to dig the files on the CD, it could even pass without the formal install.

Like it has been said, downloading sourceport base for further filesdigging is demanded:
http://deponie.yamagi.org/quake2/idstuff/q2-3.20-x86-full-ctf.exe

Then, follow the instructions:

The easiest way to install a full version of Quake II is to start with the patch. Please note that the patch is required for all full versions of the game, even the newer ones like Steam. Without it Yamagi Quake II will not work!

Download the patch: [we have it]
Extract the patch into an empty directory. The patch is just an ordinary self-extracting ZIP file. On Windows it can be extracted by double clicking on it, on other systems an archiver or even the unzip command can be used.

Now it's time to remove the following files from the extracted patch. They're the original executables, documentation and so on. They aren't needed anymore:

3.20_Changes.txt
quake2.exe
ref_gl.dll
ref_soft.dll
baseq2/gamex86.dll
baseq2/maps.lst
ctf/ctf2.ico
ctf/gamex86.dll
ctf/readme.txt
ctf/server.cfg
xatrix/gamex86.dll
rogue/gamex86.dll

Copy the pak0.pak file and the video/ subdirectory from your Quake II distribution (CD, Steam download, etc) into the baseq2/ subdirectory of the extracted patch.

If you own the optional addons you'll need to copy their gamedata too:

For The Reckoning copy the pak0.pak and the video/ subdirectory from your addon distribution into the xatrix/ subdirectory.
For Ground Zero copy the pak0.pak and the video/ subdirectory from your addon distribution into the rogue/ subdirectory.

After that, download the latest entry to the patch:
https://deponie.yamagi.org/quake2/windows/quake2-6.00.zip

And just copy and paste all the contents of the latest download to the Yamagi sourceport dedicated Quake 2 folder.

In case you have the expansion packs, create shortcuts to the game launchfile and add to their descriptions respectivey, after the comillas:

/quake2 +set game rogue
/quake2 +set game xatrix

Example: "C:\Games\Yamagi Quake 2\Quake 2.exe" /quake2 +set game rogue

Regarding music, STEAM version of Quake 2 - similarly to my version added to Quake 4 release - are both stripped down of music. But the music can be added.

The retail CD version of Quake II and both addons contain up to 11 Audio CD tracks, forming the soundtrack. Since modern computers lack the ability for classic Audio CD playback, it's often emulated by a transparent combination of CD ripping and playback, these tracks can be ripped into OGG/Vorbis files. Yamagi Quake II will use these files instead of the CD tracks.

Later Quake II version, for example the one included with Quake IV and the one available through Steam, lack the soundtrack. Nevertheless Yamagi Quake II can play it if you copy the files into the directories mentioned above.

Using a generic CD extractor / CD ripper

Install a CD extractor and set it to OGG/Vorbis files.
Put the Quake II CD into your CD drive and extract the files.
The files must be named after the CD track. Track 02 becomes 02.ogg, track 03 becomes 03.ogg and so on. On both the Quake II and the Addon CDs track 1 is the data track and can't be ripped.

Put these files into the corresponding subdirectory:
baseq2/music for Quake II.
xatrix/music for The Reckoning.
rogue/music for Ground Zero.

One must therefore create a "music" folder in baseq2 gamedata directory and place there OGG format files, named properly "Track 01" through "Track 11", even though perhaps it should start with "Track 02", since the first one was supposed to be technical. In case you have problems obtaining or downloading the files, you can create your own Quake 2 music set, just make sure it is proper format and proper filenames, in a proper destination folder.

In case the music fails to play once the game begins, go to options and press for high sound quality - the music should launch then.

Similar steps can be taken with expansion packs, with adequately filled "music" directory in their rogue and xatrix folders.

All quotes and downloads mentioned in the post come from the sites:

Worth to check them once in a while whether you have the latest version of the sourceport.

For the Quake 2 expansion packs instructions, you may check here:

Yeah I remember doing all those steps myself. But then I tested just grabbing the .pak files from my Quake 2 install and moving it to the prebuilt binaries baseq2 and it works with no problems.

The music files have to be named 02 03 04 etc. Track02 track03 etc. won't in Yamagi unless they've recently changed their code to also search for 'track*' files.

Yes, you are right.

Regarding Yamagi sourceport, I am very satisfied with my Quake 2 experience using it, especially that I smuggled some classic NIN music into it:

https://www.quaddicted.com/files/music/quake_music.zip
(Source: https://www.quaddicted.com/quake/soundtrack)

Quake 2 with dark ambient music is far better than with heavy metal one, vocalized or not.

Also important to note, the Yamagi version on ModDB portal is out of date:
http://www.moddb.com/games/quake-2/downloads/yamagi-quake-ii-532-win

The current version is 6.0.

Some texture pack that could be used with Yamagi:

EDIT:

To install, simply copy the downloaded and extracted folders into your "baseq2" directory.

How do I launch Quake 2 Expansions with Yamagi through Steam? I can play Quake 2 vanilla by Yamagi normally, but to play the expansions, I always need to use + set game xatrix in the Quake II launch options. How do I run the source port through the expansions launcher in my library?
For the convencience you can make shortcuts, using nearly the same command in their props:

In case you have the expansion packs, create shortcuts to the game launchfile and add to their descriptions respectivey, after the comillas:

/quake2 +set game rogue
/quake2 +set game xatrix

Example: "C:\Games\Yamagi Quake 2\Quake 2.exe" /quake2 +set game rogue
In case of using the in-game console, if the game restarts after launching an expansion pack so that STEAM recognizes it as a non-STEAM game or recognizes nothing at all, you can just enter your STEAM library Quake2 properties and indicate a new game launchile, in which case it would be the shortcut leading to given expansion pack.

Hello friend, i am grabing my head right now because i can't find any given option to do what you mean here, i would like to specify more on this, under which tab, in between which other options kinda stuff, you explained so lightly that makes me think that the option is in plain sight and i'm stupid or that i don't have that option
Also i do read about setting custom launch files in other discussion relating quake 1 not too long ago but it was mention without any specific details like it was no hard to find but now that i want to execute the games from steam with yamagi and this seems like my only option i'm really freaking out
Y'know, I was recompiling the instructions but came to conclusion it is just such a pain in the ass it would be better if I simply uploaded you the entire structure, just without certain core files - which you will have if you have the Quake2 - and you will simply copy these core file where needed from your original Quake2 to have a go.

Package download link - some 760MB: https://ufile.io/vtelr

The version contains:
- Yamagi 6.0 sourceport
- Quake2 - needs core file to start
- Ground Zero and Reckoning expansion packs - both need core file to start
- Zaero expansion pack, freewere
- One bonus which you will be interested to see
- Textures for Quake2, Zaero and Reckoning
- NIN music for Quake2, original music for Ground Zero and Reckoning

To get the thing go, you need to:

1. Download the package, extract it - it will create "Yamagi Quake2" folder
2. Go to your original Quake2 folder, "baseq2" directory - copy "pak0.PAK" file and paste it accordingly in "baseq2" directory of "Yamagi Quake2" folder.
3. To have expanson packs going, go to your original Quake2 directory, respectively "xatrix" and "rogue" folders, copy "pak0.PAK" folders from each of them and paste the copied files accordingly to corresponding "xatrix" and "rogue" folders of your "Yamagi Quake2" folder.
4. In your STEAM launcher, rightclick Quake2 properties and browse for new game startup file.

This is it.

You can run any mod with Yamagi sourceport.

Sorry for the inconvinience but i do really need detailed instructions to set that "new launch file" to make the reckoning and ground zero run through steam, with overlay and all, i just said that yamagi base quake 2 ran ok when i hit play but not the mission packs.
Btw, Yamagi 7.01 was released a few days ago.

Yeah, already installed, are you happen to know how to launch the reckoning and ground zero with yamagi from steam ( steam overlay, playtime count and all )?
I don't think you can with steam overlay because it launches via a batch file iirc. Steam overlay only works when games are launched directly through their executable file.

The executable file can be changed in the STEAM launcher - rightclick selected game, hit properties, browse and select new launchfile - you can theoretically cheat STEAM playing any game, making it believe it is the chosen one. But it is futile to do so, especially if there are achievements and other features compatible only with given one true application.
