I struggled to get this running with a joypad or even at all from the get-go. The game uses an odd button layout by default. I would have thought (using x-box layout) you would start with A Jump, X Fire It's not well set up for joypads and features a very clunky keymapping control panel. I had to use joy to key to get it to work, and then the controls were unreliable which when missing a jump means falling many stories below is very important.
