Now DarkPlaces is cool in many ways, but I should probably also mention that it isn't the best choice if you're going to want to play custom singleplayer maps, because of potential compatibility problems with the way DarkPlaces changes physics, monster behavior, and lighting.
Quakespasm is probably the best choice for singleplayer, but I don't think it has 360 controller support. However if you're playing on Windows, then Fitzquake Mark V is another good singleplayer engine similar to Quakespasm, and apparently it does have controller support per this post (#936) in its func_msgboard thread: http://www.celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=60831&start=936
I haven't myself tried out Fitzquake Mark V's controller support, so I'm not sure how well it works. It can also be a little bit of a pain to find the most recent build of that engine... you have to look around in that forum thread on func_msgboard. I think this is the most recent build as of now: http://quakeone.com/proquake/interims/mark_v_20150508_windows.zip But it's a good engine and if you're really looking to use a 360 controller then you might want to try out both Fitzquake Mark V and also DarkPlaces.
I wouldn't be surprised if some other Quake engines (maybe FTE?) can also be set up to support controllers, but I haven't seen details about that... if anyone knows about controller support in other engines then please share. I know that it's always possible to use some other tool that translates controller signals into keyboard and/or mouse inputs, but that never works as well as native controller support.
