350 Controller Support?
Hi, just bought Quake, and wondered if there's a way to get Xbox 360 controller support for it at all. One topic stated I'd need to make a file for the 'id1/' folder or somesuch, but I cannot seem to find such a thing on my computer. Any help would be most appreciated.

It might be able to work with Xpadder. Never tried it though.

It wouldn't be easy with the original Quake programs. Something like xpadder will get you partway there, but the camera-look won't feel quite right if you're just mapping joystick axis moves to keypresses.

I took a quick look at the QuakeSpasm engine and it doesn't seem to have 360 controller support. Although funnily enough, the Oculus Rift port of QuakeSpasm does. :-)

Your best bet for non-Oculus controller Quaking may be the DarkPlaces engine. Testing out the most recent version of DarkPlaces, it looks like:

- There's no menu option for turning on controller support (I think), but if you manually set the joy_enable console variable to 1 (instead of 0), you're good to go.

- You can use the normal keybinding menu for controls to map various actions to the buttons or triggers of the controller.

- If you want to invert the Y-axis on your lookaround, you'll need to use the console to manually set the joy_x360_sensitivitypitch variable to 1 (instead of -1).

- There are a bunch of other console variables that start with "joy_" which you can use to tweak the behavior, but it felt good to me without digging further into that stuff.

Playing the granddaddy of all modern FPS with a controller? How perverse.

Anyway, you can map mouse movements to thumbsticks with different controller mapping utilities. I stick to Antimicro and occasionally Glovepie. Never used "xpadder."

Also, nice necro.
