Wait for the floating spiky thing to go inside its belly, then jump into the teleport.

You see the Orb with spikes that is floating about ? when the orb is inside Shub, you enter the teleporter at the end of the level. Hope this helps :D

A friend from school back in 1996 actually taped down his CTRL key (which was then commonly used for firing a weapon in shooters) and left the Ranger hitting the Shub with the axe while he went out, hoping that it'd eventually die.

Yeah.. this ending is lame af... They clearly ran out of time.
The telefrag solution is not the worse.. but the boss just stand there doing nothing.

Now that I think of it... Some id games tend to end in disappointment.

Doom 2 - Lame
Quake - Lame
Doom 3 - So so
Rage - Lame

They have a hard time figuring out a satisfying epic ending for their games... or they did back then up to Rage.

I mean... Rage ends at what feels like 2/3 of the way through the plot.

Always felt like an incomplete game to me.

I will take a guess and assume it was the "engine syndrome".. Every one of these games had as a big focus it's engine development... so perhaps so much time and effort was put in creating the engine and their development tools that game design itself suffered and had to be trimmed and cut back as time ran out. The story of Quake's development is well documented and the game wasn't at all planned to be an action shooter to begin with. It was a mess and lack of planning.

I don't know much about Rage's development, but the new engine also had all sorts of issues that delayed that game for years with their new Gigatextures that didn't pay out in the end. I remember at some point there was an article regarding that the texture size for the game during it's development was already over 1 TB of size and they had to bring it down to fit in a Xbox 360 DVD...

So they were spending more time with technical issues than with game design, apparently.

Megatextures, but, yeah.

That tech was a giant waste in a lot of ways. I'm glad they've gotten rid of it on newer iterations of the engine.

Funny thing, I just read a Quake thing on Shacknews, and apparently Romero loved the telefrag thing. He commented on how the Icon of Sin wasn't a traditional boss either and seems to think that boss was awesome too.

I concur with everyone else, it's a rad idea, but lame for a final boss. And they also did have time constraints near the end too. There was supposed to be more bosses, but they all got cut, which is why there's only Cthon and Shub as "bosses".
