When starting up the game I cant control anything. I put my mouse over the game and it disappears, but I can't do anything. I can press esc to pull up the settings but I can't select anything, am I missing something?

Controller wont move the pede only rotates

I don't know if I'm missing something about how the game works. I have been able to complete NG1 by the time of posting, but sometimes my centipede goes through periods where it just... doesn't shoot? This happens within range of the enemy, and It usually lasts for about 2-3 attacks worth of time, but it has been especially frustrating when I am fighting against the elite and the centipede just doesn't do anything as I walk around....
