So what exactly are cigs and crackers for?

Is there a use for them beyond for the sake of looking fly and stocking your grocery shelves?
Do they actually do anything yet? I don't really care if they are just around for muh immersion, hitting a ciggy on the crimson beaches truly does hit different, but I want to know what the uses of the rations are for/planned to be for.

I assume same as the last game, just there to keep your hunger up and your stamina high, but still.
