Its cost me approximately 200 dollars from when I bought a Founder's pack back in 2013 and . . . that's it.
Turns out that most of the DE-created stuff wasn't all that great and the Tennogen stuff, with it being in Dollars, I couldn't use my existing Plat so I never bought any of it.
All that Plat ever was good for was buying slots. *shrugs*
Initiate Pack I - $7.50
Unreal Weapon skins - $20 (I refuse to sign up for epic)
Gara Prime - $140
Total - $307.50
Current playtime 2,667
So, it's about $0.11 cents per hour.
PS. if Yareli Prime dropped tomorrow, I would send DE another $140 without hesitation.
You can go from start to "finish" with no money spent. It's sure convenient to buy platinum packs for weapon slots etc, but even platinum can be obtained through trading relic rewards to other players. There is no case, in any way where you are required to spend a penny to progress or accomplish any goals. All of it just requires that you do a little researching and figure out what it is you want to head towards, and figure out the best route to it. Everything is achievable, fully free to play.
All these people posting pricetags are strictly if you don't care to work towards those things yourself, and would prefer to just lay down some money to just have it right out. The only exception to that is purely cosmetic skins. For everything else, just play the game and you'll get what you want.
Mostly due to not having a job
And I had everything
So no it doesn't cost anything
U just need time and some decent rng
- All of the free stuff is worth it in some capacity; though glyphs are arguably the least important to me as they are just a profile pic for the most part (and I like the Kuva Queen one from the base game anyway lol)
- If they are giving out weapons or frames you don't want, but can make the event/have the ability to claim the code or whatever; do it. You can always can the actual gun or frame and get free slots for other stuff you may have been waiting on. Had T Prime already from building her 6 months ago so I was hype for a free frame slot just to have some video up for 30 min.
- Packs; some are worth, I think the Nidus one for the initiate pack was pretty good as Nidus blows to farm out. Otherwise, I say just keep logging in and only buy plat when you get 50-75% offs and have IRL money to spare on "muh aesthetics". Otherwise trading is viable, and not too bad. If you wanted to farm a Prime, you probably can grind out another 30 plat per relic based on RnG.
- Lastly; it sorta depends on how folks play what they would have ultimately spent. I am one who hates unlocking the same things twice for example, so I would wait and get slots vs sell any of my built gear (save for the lowest of low weapons). But I have all of my frames still (at least half of them) and 7 or so primes. It has taken me years of on and off playing (and I only went from MR6 to 13 the past 2 years as I wasn't rotating much previously), and ultimately this is the games fun. Grinding can be bad, but only some really make me want to quit out of frustration (like trying to get a Necramech engine this weekend took me 16 attempts; because of the boosters, I have like 20+ of the other 3, but to my earlier point, I now have like 100 plat of farmed stuff to sell).
Though if I had to price out my account, it would probably be something like $200 or so in value at least of what I spent. I have half the frames (lot of slots purchased and some unlocked), 40 or so weapons (mostly melee, mostly purchased slots also), Wyrm Prime as I missed it originally and it is my favorite, a bunch of accessories as I like to try and make each frame look unique, at least 10 color palettes, 10+ skins, and I bought a couple of Orbiter/Clan accessories and like 1 menu option. Almost entirely visual stuff and maybe a couple of boosters.
Edit: also sitting near 1500 hours, so I justify it as "I still play this 7 years later, and they keep adding content, so I am fine dropping something like $20 every 3 months or so"
Lets see 20 plat per Warframe slot and they are about to release their 50th Warframe so I would say aim for 51 warframe slots just to have 1 of each. That puts you at 1020 Plat worth of slots there. But you do start with 2 Slots for free and can earn them from Events/Nightwave/Giveaways as well.
Weapon/Companion slots I believe are 12 plat for 2 Slots. Again can also receive them for free from Events/Nightwave/Giveaways.
I have a MR 10 account that I have been playing for free very Casually here and there since around Tennocon 2020 when Hydroid Prime was the freebie. Got Loki Prime for 2021 and Now Titania Prime for 2022. Started with Mag as my first Warframe. Excalibur Umbra from completing the storyline quest. Got 2 Warframe slots from Nightwave rewards, and used the 50 plat that was free for starting the game on a couple slots that allowed me to get Gara, Excaliber, Valkyr and an Empty slot currently. Got an Ember from Twitch Prime that was linked to a friends Amazon prime since they didn't play or have an interest in Warframe. For weapon slots I have recieved a decent number of weapons from giveaway codes, Events (Anniversary events and selling/scrapping the duplicates), Tennocon Twitch drops, and Nightwave.
Difference between the F2P MR 10 and Main Pay MR 21 account is less time maintaining my inventory sacrificing weapons that I would like to keep but don't mind parting with after maxing But I also only really Buy Slots and cosmetics on my Pay account and only Buy the plat when I get a 75% discount login reward. The free account does get held up at times waiting for events to get more slots, Frames and weapons for free since I want to keep and use all the ones I currently have at that time. I could also sell primes and Rivens for plat on the free account but haven't bothered yet.
With all that in mind I think if you are willing to grind for the stuff and only buy Slots 2k Plat would be a sweet spot for a comfortable experience allowing you to have very little fear of running out of slots slowing down your progress. 2100 plat with 75% off is about $25 CAD so a fair enough price if you like the game enough to support the Devs and would give you enough plat for slots to last for a while. My main account I will buy 1000-2100 plat once a year or every other year when I get the 75% and have funds available to buy it at the time since that is about the same as buying a discounted AAA title on Steam once a year to support the Dev team.
As for the Tennocon freebies are always useful for new players to get started. Can help push you through the early MR ranks easier at no real cost and a Prime Warframe with the Reactor and Slot will have a use at higher MR levels or on specific missions. I used Titania to complete a MR test that involved disappearing platforms where her 4 abbility allowed me to just fly around and not trigger and of the platforms other than the first one to start it.
My play time is in the quadruple digits, just so you know my level of experience.
But I picked up the game and tried it, and already in the first (probably very old) storyline you feel like the most bad-ass space ninja. It was totally worth it. I've played Destiny 2 quite a bit and the feel is kind of similar but the game plays totally differently. I mean gunplay is smooth in Destiny but with Warframe's movement, it's something else.
I play mostly Hunter in Destiny so picking up Ivara from a pack was an obvious choice. I'm kind of curious still of Ivara's Prime version and it's cost which seems quite low or even cheap on the Warframe Market. It's like 50 Plat for the set and another couple if you want the weapons. I'm just surprised, because the Ivara Prime is supposedly "Vaulted" so it should be much more difficult to grind out, however the price in market doesn't resonate with that at all.. Perhaps it was just so easy to acquire previously that there is such a large stockpile of it available?
Glad you are enjoying it so far
Ivara is pretty fun, she makes some of the harder missions pretty easy too with her skills as some of the late-game spy missions get pretty confusing. Is one of my favorites design wise too - got my prime in a black\deep-purple\coral-red\cyan sort of scheme right now that looks nice (has a vaporwave feel).
In regards to the Prime - these vary quiet wildly, and the price fluctuates a bit depending on:
- What is currently in the relic rotations
- What was just vaulted or re-vaulted
- What does the "meta" look like
So like - I grinded her out near the end of last year when the relics where available, and it did take a while; but at the end of the day, most things will if they have a T3 drop component. Though - if you really enjoy her, I would keep the prime in mind as you play. After some time, she will cycle back in or you will be in a better place to consider the primes.
And when I say "Relic's" and "T3", this is just the Prime farming system, where a mission will give you Relics, and then those have missions dedicated to opening them for a reward. These are always legacy Prime stuff and rotates often-ish (with notices so you don't miss too much). They also have 3 tiers with 3 rewards in 1, 2 in 2, and 1 reward in T3. You can also rank them to have higher odds for better rewards, but it is all RnG.
Do note though - the main difference is end-game focused mostly, as Primes are just slightly better stats, with altered mod polarity (so like Ivara gains one more mod slot with the "V" shape out the gate). That being the case, getting one "too soon" may lead to a little buyer's remorse as you may also play for a week and get someone next week that you like more and would maybe want the prime for (it is a slippery slope lol).
Though - if something seems incredibly cheap, it may not be a bad thing. 50 plat isn't a lot if you end up regretting it later (especially for a good frame), and some folks do charge much less just to offload. I ended up getting a 50% off Mirage Prime because someone just needed a couple plat for something else one day and I took the deal not thinking at all.
I'll say now you can play the whole game without spending a cent since some slots can be earned through nightwave and stuff and warframes are generally easy to farm (primes could be easier) and honestly you can buy any weapon you want with real money from the market... but the mods to actually make them good can only be bough through players and even then if you know nothing on how mods work it's the equivalen and setting your entire savings on fire because you had the idea while drunk (that's how it would probably feel, never did that).
That said you can play the whole game without spending and be fine and even get the best mods too and loot to make the weapons... but if you start spending for literally everything you gain no advantage and all you'll have to show for it is a hot steaming mess in your hands like the kind you see in a bathroom stall behind a gass station by one-too many truckers with a bad case of the runs.
In short: it's f2p friendly and p2s chaotic if you literally skip everything as quickly as possible.
Am at 3K~ hours on Steam, about 5K~ total time if you include the standalone launcher.
it is by far one of the best 'free' to plays out there, cause its genuinely free. You dont need to put a single cent into the game because nothing is 'paywalled' due to you being able to trade with players for Platinum. TennoGen ♥♥♥♥ is a different story cause its community made ♥♥♥♥ they put in the game, but literally everything else can be earned for free, its just 'time' needed to be put in.
