How to reactivate account?

I bought the ultimate seekers edition about a year ago, played for a few months and canceled. Now I want to come back but it's extremely confusing and throwing up all kinds of road blocks. Do I have to purchase the game again just to reactivate my old account?

You need to go to Playonline then click on where it says SE account management system. Then log in using your details, there should be an option to reactivate your account.
If you're having problems try using the support page or contacting SE.

If you deactiveated your Square enix or playonline account, you may have to rebuy the game. But I'm not 100% on that.

If you just canceled the subscription to the characters, do what Lilg said and goto playonline.com, click the red account button at the top, log in, click the FFXI banner on the front page, and select your old account, check the boxes of any characters you want, and hit reactive and follow the steps.

However, if you did deactive POL or your account, you will have to contact SE to find out what to do. As I think that maybe a more difficult thing to recover. But they will know.

i first played for a year or two then stopped playing for about a year or two then played for another year or two but kept my tetra master active the whole time, FFXI was awsome but account management was the worst to keep up with and (like you said) was very confusing, I reciently tried activating my account again but finally said "screw it!" its not worth the trouble...

I hate to say that because i love the FF games but always hated the account system for FFXI, they should just fix the account management, get rid of playonline and content ID's (though i like the playonline music and themes) to make it easier to manage account maybe even make it f2p.

GL with this but seriously aside from account management i think they will shut the game down soon, my brother sent me something a few weeks ago that said they were sutting down and letting most old player and all new players play for a few weeks, i cant find his post about it though.

If i were you just go get FFXIV, i just finished my free period and it was a great game, i would definitely pay for it im just not making enough money right now and really there are f2p games like ESO that are just as good, if FFXIV was f2p i would have paid for the game and expansions cant say i would have purchased anything else but they would have made some money on me faster its just not feesable for me to have a monthly subscription right now...

What are you talking about??
FFXI has development support through the next year, they aren't ending it anytime soon. In fact they just posted 2 days ago about plans for updates, content, and stories through april and to next december.

Though Xbox 360 and Ps2 console support is ending by April 1st, PC support will be going awhile. And PS2/360 users can switch to PC free by downloading the client at the playonline website by clicking the goddess gala banner, and just using your regular login information. And since FFXI can run on just about any pc or laptop made in the last 12 years, generally little issue in doing so.

People have been saying doom and gloom about FFXI for months since they orignally said main content updates were ending in november, but as you can see, they've effectively said: Nope, it's going anywhere.

While we don't know about any expansions, we do know they'll be adding things frequantly thru 2016, including the much desired update to Relic, Mythic, and Empyrean weapons^^

FFXI is still alive, tho it has its niche market like Everquest, and Ultima online.

So tell people to quit calling it dead!
