I just downloaded the game and the graphics are terrible. I remember playing the game when it first came out and the graphics were nothing like this, all blocky and faded. Am playing with Windows 10, on the same machine I play ffxiv on, with no problem. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

You have to use the "Launch FFXI Config utility" when clicking play from steam. From there you can set the Overlay Graphics Resolution and Background Resolution plus some other settings. For a newer gaming PC, you should be able to do Overlay at 1920 x 1080 for 1080p and Background at 4096 x 4096.
If you notice the framerate lower than normal, try 1920 x 1080 for both. Other settings I use are: (General) Uncheck Enable MIP mapping, Fullscreen mode, Gamma Base -0.5; (Screen Size) Overlay 1920 x 1080, background 4096 x 4096, menu ----; (Textures) Texture Compression Uncompressed, On-screen Maps Uncompressed, Fonts High Quality; (Effects) Check Enable bump mapping, Environmental Animation Smooth; (Sound) Check Enable Sound, Uncheck Always On, SoundEffectNum 20; (Misc.) Check Enable hardware mouse cursor, Check Graphics Stabiliaztion.

Get windower. You can further enhance the graphics with it. There is also a method to get it running at 60fps but I never bothered to use it.
