Running on Windows 10

I played this game back in middle school a million years ago, so I am aware how old and clunky this game is by today's standards. I'm having trouble getting it to run on my PC. It boots up and then chugs for a bout 30 seconds before it responds again.

A little googling has shown me that the game isn't set up be played on a modern multi processor PC; I have attempted a few of the fixes and plugins the internet suggested to fix it but to no avail, can anyone describe their config and settings for me to duplicate?

I'm running a
Intel i7 4GHz
16 GB ram
Graphics Chipset AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 4096 MB

Any thoughts would be helpful

I would try using the Windower or Ashita launchers. They seem to remedy most minor modern hardware issues. I've had better luck with Ashita on AMD and Windower on Intel chipsets. I've also had to use the dgvoodoo2 wrapper on my last gaming rig or I got 4-8 FPS in town on a Ryzen 5 processor......

I've tried both of these launchers and dgvoodoo. I've tried playing with affinity.
It still doesn't run. The game boots up and then goes unrespsonsive and takes a minute to process any command, it will unfreeze for a moment only to freeze again the second I attempt to do anything at all. I'm unsure what to do here. I eventually just need to go into the task manager and find it in 'not responding' and have to manually end the task.
