Universe Sandbox

Seriously, Dropped VR
Pretty pissed as the only reason I got Universe Sandbox was for VR. If I knew they were going to stop updating VR I would not have purchased. Yes I know I can download a old version. bought the game when they announced the update.

I’m sorry that we’re discontinuing VR support in Universe Sandbox. It was a hard decision for us to make.

We agree that Universe Sandbox is a great experience in VR.

However, despite Universe Sandbox continuing to sell well enough to maintain our team and the average number of concurrent players slowly increasing year after year, the VR version, disappointingly, never made any traction.

Unfortunately, the small number of players in VR made the disproportionately high VR maintenance cost hard to justify. Although, should the VR market improve, we may reconsider this decision.

You can still play previous versions of Universe Sandbox in VR. Here are some instructions for how to access the last version of Universe Sandbox that supports VR

You can learn more about why we made this decision in our blog post

If you purchased Universe Sandbox through our website, we'd be happy to issue you a refund for your purchase. You can contact us about that at

Same here. "Hard decision" or not, its disappointing.

The VR control scheme was always a confusing mess in this app, probably the reason why other VR users quit using this app already, the biggest reason was probably that it was confusing and complicated to even start the VR version, popular apps like Virtual Desktop always started the 2D version because the VR version was hidden in the steam settings.

I hoped that VR performance and control scheme will get better over time, not that VR support will be ditched. Anyway this app is useless now, I will look elsewhere for a better astronomy app.

VR is a disaster on PC's. There needs to be VR hardware that comes with drivers that just adapts existing games to VR. All the VR equipment I've seen takes specialized apps and a monthly subscription to work. That will never be popular enough for many games to utilize.

Well, I am glad I researched before I purchased. I was going to purchase it strictly for the VR experience, but since it's been dropped, I think I will pass.
I'll download an older version and stick with it - it's still a great experience

If you do want one with VR, I think space engine has VR support. It's not really the same thing, but if you just wanna create or look at stars and planets, it's good.

you can just go back to older versions if you like it so much, honestly it isnt that great in vr and it makes sense to discontinue it for updates and stuff
Taking this off my wishlist due to dropped VR.

This is terrible. I was also interested in the game only in VR mode. It's such a pity that I'll have to say goodbye to it.:sotsad:
I don't play often, but when I do, it is only VR. My biggest dislike in a game is when they remove features. it is even more annoying when it is the main feature I use. I'll be changing my review and uninstalling the game.
Well this is crap!

What is the last version that supported VR?
You do know falsly advertising this as having VR support is FALSE ADVERTISING and is Illegal.

Forget the motion controls. We don't need them.
Just let us use the VR headset with our mouse and keyboards.

We know that the motion controls are where most of the pain comes from. Using the engine you use for the game it is not all that time consuming to just add the camera rig.

Take the motion controls out of the project and i think 90% of the work is no longer needed.

We have removed all mention of VR and VR-related support from our Steam Store page so that nobody would purchase Universe Sandbox with the expectation of continued VR support at this time.

We're still working to remove it from every single place it has been mentioned on various storefronts and our website, but if you do find somewhere that it's still mentioned and shouldn't be, please let us know so we can correct it.
