Video Questions
Hi all

I have been grinding out Solar Systems and planets for a RPG game called Traveller.

Over time I have managed to make a lot of ok looking planets.

https://www.reddit.com/r/traveller/comments/1idehrg/planets_of_the_regina_subsector/ for example.

So I am trying to record a video of a planet rotating. I know how to access video capture and where the files are stored.

However....

1. Over the 30 seconds nothing seems to move, and

2. I can't find any application that will play the files

Its a long time since I used gifs and back then you double- clicked and they opened in media player.

But now I can't find a way to get them to play.

This is a me issue but how to I do this?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry should add I am using Windows 11.

Thanks for asking about this and I'm sorry for the issue. I am on Windows 11 and the default app that my computer uses to open GIFs recorded in Universe Sandbox is the included Photo App, which plays Universe Sandbox GIFs without issue for me.

This runs automatically when I double-click GIFs recorded in Universe Sandbox.

Ok I have tried a few things at for some reason while I record for 30 seconds the files are only 4 seconds play time, so it looks like nothing is moving.

I have no idea why this happens. I'll set the record time longer and see if the recording runs longer.

Ok I set the capture time up to 2 minutes and the file still only runs for 4 seconds.

I'll add this to the weird stuff that happens like atmospheric pressure jumping from 1 to 800 for no reason.

This is an example of two issues I have been having.

Thanks for sharing those extra details and the example simulation.

For the atmosphere, it looks like you have a lot of liquid nitrogen on the planet's surface. However, at the temperature and atmospheric pressure of your planet, nitrogen will evaporate from a liquid to a gas. The Atmosphere Pressure jumping is all of that nitrogen evaporating into the atmosphere.

If you remove the liquid nitrogen from the planet's surface the atmosphere should be more stable.

I'm unfortunately still not able to reproduce the issue with GIF recording. I am able to record out up to the full 5 minutes of capture that our internal tools allow us to use.

How are you recording the GIFs? Are you using the Video Tool or pressing F10? What are your video settings, including Capture Mode, Save on Capture, Quality, FPS, Color Update Frequency?

Have you confirmed there is plenty of space on your hard drive for the GIF files?
Butters Feb 4 @ 5:56pm
Ok I'll watch for liquid gas although liquid water and liquid nitrogen shouldn't both be present.

I record by going into Tools, select Video, and then click on the Start Video Capture button. That way I can go straight to the file.

I'll try using F10 and see if that makes a difference.

I have enough HD space - 82 GB free.

Ok I recorded a 45 second file which came to 24.1 MB using F10. It also played for only 4 seconds. So regardless of file size gifs only play for 4 seconds.

So I am wondering if Photo is the problem.

Hmm, that's interesting. If you'd like, you're welcome to email us or otherwise share, through imgur for example, one of the GIFs with us.

If we can play the full GIF, that would suggest the issue is with the playback. If we see only 4 seconds, then it suggests the issue is with the encoder or in Universe Sandbox, so that could at least help narrow down the source of the issue.

Ok I put a file up on Imgur.

And it seems to work. That means that Photo for some reason can't play a full clip.

Thank you for trying that. It does seem like there is no issue with the GIF file itself and may be some setting on your computer that's not allowing the playback for some reason.

You may need to reach out to Microsoft support for help with this issue. I tried a quick search to see if there was anything obvious to try, but I wasn't able to turn up much with just a quick search.

I'm sorry for this inconvenience, it certainly sounds like a frustrating issue.

The annoying part is people were going "what program are you using" and I wanted to show that it created entire solar systems not just a 2D picture of a planet.

As Imgur works I'll use it. Screw dealing with Microsoft.
