I'm not trolling, this is the better version.
Universe Sandbox has a somewhat confusing naming history. You can read about the details in a blog post that we wrote on the topic if you are interested:

The short version is that a couple of years ago, we renamed "Universe Sandbox ²" to just "Universe Sandbox" to show our commitment to keeping this version updated for the foreseeable future.

I can assure you that there was no malicious intent in renaming the product or removing the first one for sale.
I'm really sorry you got that impression. How could we have better communicated our intent?
The original Universe Sandbox (which sold for $2-$10 on Steam between 2011-2015) was created using a now-defunct 3D engine called Truevision 3D, and only by starting from scratch in Unity has the sequel been able to become what it is today. As a small studio with limited resources, it did not make sense to split our attention between the new one and Legacy (released in 2011 and never in early access as that didn't exist until 2013).
We've continued to develop and release free updates for the current version of Universe Sandbox since it was released on Steam in 2015 (as “Universe Sandbox ²”), including after our rebranding in 2019. We plan to continue working on Universe Sandbox far into the future, and you can read more about what we've currently working on in our 2024 Roadmap post
