you click the "add object" button, select the galaxy category, pick an entry, and place it.

No, Like Manually
Like placing a black hole and placing Nebulas

that's not going to work properly. the actual galaxy objects are "cheated" to be actually able to hold together. the actual supermassive black hole object does not have the dark matter effects built into it the same way galaxy objects do.

so even if you do place everything you need, it's not going to be "right," because dark matter effects are not applied.

At the moment, there's no way to build up or manually create a galaxy (like the galaxies created from Tool > Add > Galaxy)

Although, I agree that is something you probably should be able to do.

now this isnt quite true, but again the caveat that the "galaxy" isnt going to spin correctly.

everything you need is in the add objects panel. first, you want to place the supermassive black hole. there should be a "cygnus x-1" object in the black holes section, you'll probably want to use that.

now comes the tricky part, you need to add hydrogen clouds. you'll have to play with the settings a lot to make them the proper size and density.

once you've filled in about 75-85% of a disk extending ~100,000 light years from your supermassive black hole, you'll want to add stars. use the "add random star" button from the stars section of the add object panel. distribute 150-200 (or as many as you can handle without going below 25 fps) stars throughout the disk you made.

there you go, you've made a bootleg galaxy. it's not going to spin correctly, the outer edges will be orbiting much too slowly. you're also not going to have star clusters, or even a fraction of the proper mass.
