100% CPU usage no matter what i change in settings
Hi.
Just purchased the simulator but i can't understand why my CPU usage is so high.

I have a 6 core 10th gen i7 intel cpu and a rtx 2060 nvidia gpu.

If i start a new simulation and add 1 Earth, cpu usage go to about 60%. if i add a Sun, go to about 90.

If i open "solar system" simulation pack cpu goes 100% and stay there forever, while gpu stay about 30-40%.

This make no sense. And another thing that makes no sense is:
I go to settings and set EVERYTHING i can to lowest of off, for graphics and performance tabs (i suppose graphics won't help anyway since simulator is not using half of gpu).

The only difference i have is visual. System usage changes nothing. I believe lowering things in performance decrease a lot of calculations, but doesn't help to real system usage.

I can't play more than 1 sun and 1 planet without melting my cpu. :/

"System requirements" seem way innacurate for this. "You don't need a supercomputer" is not what is seems to be.

Did i miss something? Should I set Beta in Steam to some specific version other than "none" to get maybe a better optimized version?

It's the number of physics equations yer cpu has to go through at once. Even at the solar system level yer still talking about an incredible number of calculations. The game has to calculate all the forces for every significant object in the solar system. I noticed the same thing, and it bogs down my game.

i found a workaround. unfortunately, not from game itself. even if i set EVERYTHING in settings to lowest value, nothing stops game from taking cpu to max with a few objects like sun and maybe some others (no need to be a full solar system to experience max cpu usage).

what i did was simple... on Windows 10:
in power plans, i created another plan and set processor power management maximum to something like 50%, 60% or whatever value lower than 100... (testing some good value that not melt my cpu).

60% for my machine was great. the app still runs with no problems, and my cpu don't start a fire in my desk. very cool and simulator running well.

interesting, rtx 2060 gpu here was never used more than 40%, even with tons of objects at maximum quality values. the problem is indeed cpu.

pity, with a TON of options inside simulator settings, i had to cut my cpu from o.s. settings to make things work well.

maybe sometime devs could add an option to cut cpu usage from game settings, it would be better than changing power plan to run the simulator.

why are you afraid of using your CPU?
In its core Universe Sandbox is a physics simulator, and a fairly accurate one.
Physics is calculated on CPU in this title, and therefore the game is hardly CPU limited.

If it runs fine, don't worry about your CPU-load. Your CPU is built for calculating things.

Having high usage of CPU/GPU is not uncommon. As long as you don't enable Vsync or do what you did, your computer will try as hard as it can to get those extra fps. This game uses your CPU to calculate things and not your GPU. If your computer is overheating then you should probably consider upgrading your cooling.

it's not overheating, it was just a "way of saying", because with max cpu usage the coolers runs at max too.

in fact, it's a laptop cpu, an i7 10750H inside a lenovo legion 5i with one of the most well-made cooling models for a laptop. no other game gave me issues with power/cpu/gpu usage until now. and even for some high demanding ones, i never saw 100% usage full time.

i undestood that the main point of this "game" (simulator) is cpu usage because of physics simulation.

but my worries are about constant max cpu usage, regardless of any game settings. and i didn't understand well why the game still runs very well with cpu cut from control panel settings. i'm using 80% now, but even 60% setting i see no difference. and the other thing impressed me is i changed everything from settings and no difference too.

now i'm just doing this trying to preserve lifetime from cpu, since i see no difference, then i keep cpu cut. if i don't experience any changes with 100% cpu or 60% cpu or with all settings as default or modified, then why make cpu suffer?

i only would like to see some preset settings like "low / mid / high" etc that effectively changes hardware usage. :)

i think you already found the best solution for your concerns, although i think you shoulnd't be worried about your hardware lifetime. But the fans may be annoying too, and you can save some energy :)

interestingly i noticed, that enabling VSync in the settings increased my CPU usage from 75% to 92%, while decreasing GPU usage from 50% to 15%. (185fps vs 60fps). i guess the game is investing in more accurate calcuation (on CPU side) then. tested with the standard solar system scenario after starting the game.

unfortnunately, it looks like the game doesn't have a proper framelimiter apart from VSync.
