Question about Random Moons
Hey all, thank you in advance for any help, sincerely.

I used the "Random Moon" option to add a moon to a planet... It gave me a moon named "Tuade" and it was the coolest moon id ever seen, but never heard of. I tried to add 2 moons to this particular planet but they werent being friendly and collided...

I tried to search for this moon in the search bar for moons and minor categories but it was nowhere to be seen, I thought I didnt remember the name correctly... Then I tried to add another Random Moon and while I still had the moon on screen , I searched for the name in the search bar and nothing.

So I am assuming that these are quite literally randomly generated moons and names? I also assume that I cannot generate the same moon, Tuade, again?

Again, thanks for reading and if anyone has any insight on how the "Random" object generator works Id really appreciate it.

Okay, so I reloaded a previous save with the line of thought that the save happened before I added the moon so if I added random moon, itd maybe still be the the next moon in queue to be generated...I was correct...except it looks COMPLETELY different.

I added it to the same parent planet and at almost the exact distance... the planet isnt even around a sun so the heat from a star wouldnt be a variable....

When it generated last time, it was blue bodied with "clouds" of some sort that moved around. I am not doing it justice. This time however, its just a red ball.... weird. I am confused how this random feature works

I was just trying to search for "Dysnomia", which is Eris' moon but its not in the game, is something wrong with my search bar?

I Googled "Tuade" and cannot find any information about a moon...so I am assuming the game does in fact randomly generate names as well as objects? But I have been able to repeatedly generate Tuade again and again and its now having a res appearence.

So, are there just a set amount of "Random Moons" to chose from? Fictional moons with pre set names? IDK why Tuade is looking red now instead of blue and cloudy .....

OK, so now if i generate "Random Small Moon" I get all the same moons I get from "Random Moons" but with different appearences. Tuade generated as a random small moon and now its lime green. What the hell , this is wack.

Dysnomia is not in Universe Sandbox ² yet, but we've been doing some database updates. I'll mention it to our team. :)

"Random [X]" does indeed randomly generate an object with a random appearance, random properties, and a random name. (The exceptions are "Random Known Star" and "Random Exoplanet", which select randomly from the database.) There may be a higher frequency of some names than others, which is why you see that name popping up, and it's the same for any type of object.

There are lots of different textures for moons in the game and every time one of them is chosen. I wanted to generate a moon that looked like Lepetus but in the prosses i got 2 identical moons. This means that the textures are not generated

The textures of random moons and planets are generated by combining two of our 16 different planet textures at randomized magnitudes, offsets, and inversions.

You can see what combinations of textures are used to generate random planet surfaces by opening their Properties and going to
Surface > Elevation > Elevation Map 1 or 2
