Maybe not as tough as 88-4, because I think only Blue_Tetris can make levels that tough, but tough by metanet standards.
Nevertheless, there were many levels in v1.4 that were overall more challenging and fun than those in v2, while they didn't cause you to get stuck for months trying to beat them like 88-4 did, at least for me.
It's nice to know that there is going to be some challenge, because I got worried having only Nv2 as the latest N-game to judge (I don't own a console so I've never played N+).
First of all, we worked very hard to smooth out the difficulty curve overall, making new levels for both ends -- easier levels and harder ones. And then there are the layers -- we added some challenges so that even seasoned players can play through the easiest levels without being bored, and when they think they're done the hardest levels, there's even more to try.
Then, the levels themselves are much more interesting -- we can say without a doubt that these are the best levels we've ever made. 10 years of experience will do that ;)
We also changed the layout of episodes, so twice as many episodes are unlocked than in previous games in the series, meaning you're less likely to get stuck on one.
We're pretty sure you'll love what we've done in N++, it absolutely merits the extra '+' :)
But as Mare pointed out above, N++ is also easier than any previous versions, in that we designed the difficulty curve to be much more gradual.
We tried to make getting all the gold a *lot* harder than in previous versions, so that if you're a noob (or just relaxing) you can simply try to beat the level, while experts (or people who have beaten all the levels and want more of a challenge) can keep it interesting by trying to get all the gold. There are also even harder challenges too, but I don't want to spoil them ;)
