That being said, you can also play online multiplayer using Parsec or Steam Play, both work great, other than the natural input lag which is to be expected. We do online races from time to time in the community, for instance. If you're not aware, the community mostly hangs in Discord, you're invited: https://discord.gg/nplusplus
In general I disagree that N++ went backwards. I'm not sure how much you've played N++, but it's orders of magnitude more polished in gameplay and more bountiful in content, it more than compensates for the deletion of a couple of enemies or tiles, which was deliberate for design and minimalism purposes (the tiles of N++ are the tiles of N, the original entry in the series).
