Poor performance with RX 7800 XT on Linux.
Hello!

I tried both the native and Proton versions of the game, in both versions i can barely break 50 FPS with 1440p High. Zoomed out, i'm even getting 30 FPS.

I even tried lowering some settings, it seems like, as soon as there's more than one thing on the screen, the FPS dips significantly.

I know this card can do better, so i'm wondering, is the bottleneck the CPU maybe?

Ryzen 5 5600g
32 GB DDR4
Nvme drive
Radeon RX 7800 XT

Is this normal or can i do something to optimise it? I haven't tried the Windows version, but other games i played had pretty much the same results on either OS, so i'm not sure WFTO will be super improved.

I'll try it though for science if needed. :)

The very first thing I'd look at is the Shadow Settings. Though even with that your performance sounds outside of what I would expect. Unless you have Shadows turned to max and the practically infinite shadow distance enabled.

WFTO's Shadows are the biggest performance hogs due to the nature of the environment and lights in the game, as a feature it was added way post-development mostly as a vanity thing.

If you have them enabled try different shadow settings. If you have shadows turned to their max value then ensure your shadow distance is set to low and resolution Medium or Low. This will cull the shadows much sooner.

If you have them on Important Only you can definitely turn the Shadow Distance and Resolution up a bit.

WFTO is definitely a CPU limited game, specifically single core performance as it is not multi-threaded.

Here's the settings:

Just tried it on Windows and it's definitely better here. Getting 70 FPS zoomed out, with dips to 55 FPS in busy areas. Middling out at around 60ish FPS on my 75Hz display at 1440p.

So it's definitely a Linux thing.
However, i'm not sure what would be causing this, on both Proton and native versions...

Not that it matters much, but running Fedora 40 KDE with the latest kernel and mesa. So the drivers aren't old for this card, and it indeed works elsewhere perfectly fine.

Oh well, at worst scenario, i can play it on Windows. But i'd be interested in optimising it on linux as well.

Starting a new My pet Dungeon map, vsync off, getting 105+ FPS with dips to 85.
So yeah, definitely a Linux only performance issue.

EDIT: 230 FPS in posession mode. So yeah, works fine on Windows.

Hmm, i did a bit of digging, and turns out Unity games have a performance problem on linux in general. WFTO is made in Unity right?

Cause i also play Subnautica, and it's also chugging a lot when in reality, it's not that demanding, especially for a 7800 XT.

So mystery solved i guess, don't make WFTO 2 in Unity maybe? :D
Or is it too late at this point? ;)

In any case, great dev team, outstanding support for the game, and i'm here for WFTO 2 whenever it comes! :)

Cheers!
