Get DK2 instead, it actually works
If, like me, you spent most of your childhood playing the Dungeon Keeper franchise then you probably also nearly wet yourself with excitement when you first heard about this project 2 years ago. I know I did. So great was my love and nostalgia for DK, I didnt want an inferior , unfinished game to taint my epic memories of one of the greatest games ever released and so I decided, after having a look at the bedrock betas original state, that I would bide my time and wait for the full version of the game. Mainly because I've had early access games break my heart so many times before. So I waited
..... And Waited
.....And Waited

....and finally! the words i have been waiting 2 years to see are posted. Full Release April 2nd! I cant begin to describe how thrilled I was. By all accounts and reviews i had read, everything was going fine. Bugs were being found, reported and fixed. The early access scheme was serving its purpose. I even had to stop myself from rushing off and buying it then n there because, i thought, surely if they're this close to a full launch after 2 years, SURELY its finished? At least to the point where you can play through a full campaign with all creatures, traps etc? However, very unlike myself, i continued to wait for the full release. After all it's DEFINITELY gonna be in tip top shape for the 1.0 launch, right? I mean thats what v1.0 MEANS at the end of the day, isnt it? A complete, finished and playtested game? Thats what it used to mean anyway.

Well it breaks my heart to inform you, dear reader, that that is no longer the case. April 2nd arrived. I purchaced my copy of WFTO, downloaded it, waited for the updates and with all the excitement of a little boy on christmas morning, I clicked play. Here is a rough transcription of my thought process at that time

WHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP.... thats a black screen.
Well, okay, Some games can take a good 5 mins to load the first time. nothing to worry ab- THERE we go. OHMYGODITSGOTTHEORIGINALMENUWITH3DMAPSTHESEGUYS AREAWESOME! Start new campaign! Come on come on come on come on come on! Sweet holy mother of god is it really taking this long to load the level. have the kettle boiled n tea made n still looking at loading sc- FINALLY.

*roughly 15 min of HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE Dungeon keepers back HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHE with the occasional drop in FPS*

okay, enough dickin around. destroy the inhibitor

CRASH

Well, i was slighlty peeved at this point but kept my composure, googled the problem and saw the devs were aware and hard at work. Now I'd like to say at this point, before ppl start jumping down my throat and to see whether or not people are actually reading the whole post (long as it is) I am aware just how hard the devs have been working since thursday to get this thing up n running. I mean 3 patches in 24hrs. Thats just amazing. Brilliantly done boys. Unfortunately for some reason, whether it be patches or just my comp (Which i assure you meets the recommended specs) Now i cant even load a level and am currently re-installing the game as I have heard that helps the "Fatal Error in GC" crash.

Now I am pretty damn annoyed that the game isnt in a playable state at the point of its release. Yes the devs have done a damn fine job to try and rectify the situatuion. Problem is after gettin a small taste after so many years. I found myself wandering over to GOG.com and picking up the timeless classic DK2 for little more than E5, downloaded it in 2 mins and spent a good 3 hrs playing it. And I realised that rather than spend nigh E30 for a game that quite simply doesnt work at the moment and getting nothing but heartache, I should probably post an unnessecarily long winded blow by blow emotional rollercoaster reconstruction of my experiences with WFTO explaining why ppl, at this stage at least, would have a LOT more fun if they were to get DK2 from GOG, for E5 and spend your leftover E20 on any damn thing you please. I'll put it to you this way. E30 for 10 mins of interrupted fun and unlimited forum trawling or E5 for hours and hours of nostalgic adventuring.

Im not saying dont buy WFTO. I still hold great hopes for this game. All im sayin is dont buy it RIGHT NOW. If your jonesin for a Keeper fix, take a hit of DK2 (or DK gold for that matter)

---Update---

As i already said in the post most people didnt bother readin (Seriously, 1 of the commenters read it through. If you dont want to read it keep moving n keep your thoughts to yourself) Devs are doing a great job. Dont know if it was reinstall or the latest updates but lvl 2 just ran through start to finish with not a single hiccup. In short, i'll be deleting this post if lvl 3 continues in same vein

---Update 2----

NOPE!! same ♥♥♥♥ for lvl 3. Crashed while trying to load. "Fatal Error in GC Too Many Threads"

Back to DK2 i guess. Wonder how many times I can play through the campaign before I can get into lvl 3 of WFTO

Not a choice, If you lost money in past on unfinished games, then it becomes a effect of a cause.

I have to say if I had to go back ot a older DK game it would be the first one (something about that graphical style that just seems so interesting). That and I found the controls in DK2 to be a little weird.

IMHO they're both epic games. Will prob get DK after I finish DK2, I just recommended DK2 because I know theres issues with old games on new systems and I knew for a fact DK2 had been patched. I assume DK is as well but dont know for sure.

As for the controls, I'm playing through DK2 atm and having no issues whatsoever. Defaults are set to use the arrows but you can manually set up your keys too so crack on, say I! :D

Can't disagree with the OP. I picked up DK2 on GOG as well and despite the weird font problems it is a vastly superior experience.

I found DK and yeah it totally works on my Win7 :)

Agreed OP and Webby

fps drops, crashes, weird balancing (like the huge AI minion armies at level 12), I want to finish the campaign, but it is hard in this state...

I trust the devs will fix the issues...
Greystar 9 ABR 2015 a las 13:03
See I've only ever had 1 load issue and 2 crash to desktop issues and both those were AFTER I finished a mission. Fortunately both times the game recognized I completed those missions. I suspect it's the thread issue they are still working on fixing. (yes I read the whole post)

As far as those that suggest getting DK2 I'd love to but Gog.com is international and my debit card (company) won't let me use it for international purchases nor will it let me even set it up properly in Paypal (and yes I know what I'm doing I've had my Paypal account since it first existed).

Only one problem with the Dungeon Keeper line... They just don't work, and the best luck I have gotten so far is under Wine in Linux, where I had missing textures.
Under Windows it wouldn't even run, possibly it ran under Win 2k on VMWare Workstation, but performance was pretty horrid to say the least.
BaronMcBoomBoom 10 ABR 2015 a las 1:19
@CMDR Sweeper. Sorry, the mobile version doesn't have a reply button. if you buy a legit copy from GOG.com it works perfect. Has been patched to operate on win 7. I couldn't run my original copy of DK2 on win 7 in the past n even got a cracked copy (I'd already bought the game, don't judge) to see if that would work but didn't. Only GOG copies will work that I'm aware of. N for e5.50 (or tenner for the 2) ya cant really go wrong

Thank you topic starter, this is what I intend to do: wait till it's 100% playable

Well there's your problem.
If you want to play games why bother with Linux?

wow, people actually complaining that the post is too long? thats kinda pathetic. Ive read OPP's comments and they are fair enough. Some might recognise me as a making a thread the other day telling the whiners to get some perspective and grown up. I stand by my general meaning but they were not aimed at all people disapointed (eg: the OP), just at the large amount of threads which really didnt seem to be looking at the contrast between this small dev team and the issues they would of had and with a big studio and the more deservign anger at them when they screw up//

I havent experienced game-breaking problems like OP but it seems plenty have. I hope the week gone by has resolved the majority of the issues for them

Still getting random CTDs. Typically right when you think you've nailed one of the many rushy levels that push you from the start. It's like they secretly don't want you to play or enjoy the game...
