The Rear Guard
I must be missing something. I am getting swamped. My minions haven't time to train as before, and they cannot beat back the tide. Instead, they are staying low level and getting worn down.

I seem to remember mention of a potion. Freeze something? Am I supposed to be using that? Is that what this level is all about?

You can brew a freeze potion and click it over the cauldron to drop it on enemies to freeze them. I don't find it that useful though as it just backs up the enemy waves so you end up fighting even more of them at once after they thaw lol

It's a mess.

The Occuli will head out across the map as soon as they spawn, drawing enemies back to the base.

The dungeon is open. I'm constantly filling in holes, while dwarves constantly tear it open.

I'm low on mana and cannot use many traps.

I don't have enough time to design more effective rooms. I don't have time to manage training, building, researching, or anything else.

What am I missing?

The freeze potion will barely help you here.
I suggest you scout around with the spell that reveals fog of war, for 4 of the closest enemy portals. You can build bridges towards each of them. Drop all your creatures near one, and rest up a bit. Rinse and repeat.

If you really can't get through, start a new game after scouting the map and knowing the lay out. Start with building the bridges right after you're prompted to start the ritual, while doing this, ignore the first wave of dwarves for the most part. Just under 10 units should be enough to take out a portal, and you can try to immediatly take out another even before any waves (Except for that scripted first one) are spawned, as long as you support your units with heal.

Alternatively you could try to focus on defences and completing the ritual fast. This would involve using the obey spell on cultists in the ritual chamber, with work-a-lot potions, while protecting your flanks and center with bombards and lotus, and your units, of course. You can actually complete the ritual very quickly if you can continually use obey on a handful of cultists - but that does mean no mana for offensive spells nor much mana to lock away for imps/defences, and requires a quick hand for microing your creatures and obey spell.

However, I find taking out the 4 closer portals, combined with placing defences in the center, a much easier and more convenient option. Still a few dwarves that flank inside every now and then, but really just a few.

I can't get the potions to work in the first place. They just stay in my hand and don't do anything?

You can only drop them on your own territory.

got it. Thanks!

You right-click to drop them. You have to use them, yourself. Your minions can do nothing with them. It's a neat idea. Just remember the effect is very short. Probably more helpful against eople, where everything moves faster.

That's wierd. Didn't even see any other responses.
