These units are able to take combat damage and did so in all of my tests, they also fade over time correctly.
Behaviours did not change with the death of the wizard, except that they were raging after their master died. But they would still take combat damage and fade as normal. I also tested the relationship between units being bonded to a new master, but this all seemed to work correctly.
Whatever is happening is an edge case that I've not yet worked out the source of. Unfortunately esoteric issues like this are extremely low priority with the game having been in maintenance mode for years now.
If I ever happen to catch it myself when I do occasionally work on the game I might be able to identify the cause.
