I don't recall any mention of controlling them (playing through the game today) as that seems to be an intended con to them.
What you can do as well is, to turn of that they will spawn
Other than that by design of god games direct control of your units is not intended so we didn't want to give you the option to permanently shut off parts of their AI processes.You could say it's the nature of the beast :)
The ones that seem to get into trouble are the Occuli, the spider looking thingie, and the other flying thingie.
I didn't know you could do custom warbands, that's cool, thanks for the tip.
