It's probably a mod conflict.
Because there are superrare-reports out there about freezes with cotton harvesters but nobody of the reporters ever gave logfile content or any information about used mods so this tiny amount of reports end up into nothing.
how would you know that, you work for them? and since when its player responsibility to be part of fixing the game? While giants is siting on millions of dollars they could afford some testers but hey lets send dome cringe people here like you and blame on the player.

Cotton (harvesters) have been bugged since it was introduced to the series, amazingly enough GIANTS are clueless to how too fix them for any "new" game version.
Hopefully it want take many months before some fixes come.
It's not a mod, its just the regular one's and yeah it's the same issue in singleplayer, we have believes of it being a possible mod conflict, but without us removing every 50 mods we have, there was just no way of telling which one it is.
Besides recording the incident and it freezing idk what else to do besides saying what we're seeing.
I have not had a single bug since they where introduced. I did not have a single freeze since they where introduced.
I read multiple forums about the farming simulator franchise and reports about that are rare, never with any deeper description so they never result in any potential solution. An i play this franchise for ages now.
And joridiculous, i was at a point where i just wanted to leave you alone but you keep riding the dead pony with the steam level. Competence has no number. Even steam level 62 might prove that as you can craft yourself up to that point but nothing else. Steam level shows nothing.
The game creates an internal logfile (log.txt) and if you play on a server this also creates a logfile. And if you don´t restart the game (where the log gets reset and created fresh) you can read what the game tried to do last before the freeze appeared. This might....it might lead to a solution.
Must be something specific causing this.
The game has currently one rare appearing bug where it freezes for exactly 30 seconds, in the console you can see that it hangs while loading the "crow.i3d" - for unknown reasons. When this happens it looks for impatient people like the game froze and has to be restartet.
But this one is not related on buying or renting a cotton harvester. But it might situational happen in this situation.
In the end a logfile is still the best thing to start with. Else it´s just guessing in the blue.
Update: Found broken mod causing the issue
I had the same problem just now, and after a some trial and error, I've found out that for me the mod LIFTABLE PALLETS AND BALES (with the image of a pallet and a wraped bale in hand), which had an update, seems to be the problem. After i turned that off my cotton harvester worked just like before, I hope this helps others too :)
