Are you talking about modded maps by chance? I've merged a decent amount of fields together on the default American map and I haven't had any issues but I haven't tried any other maps yet
Reset vehicle / tool also can help.
or just quit game and load again.
I'll just cover the fields and run some cattle on the ground.
Sometimes there is no reason and the best thing to do is make sure you are on the field, hold H, click on reset, exit, press H and just step back. Failing that, try a restart and repeat above process.
I've merged many, many fields on Giants maps and modded maps without ever having an issue. If I found it happening, I'd be looking for a different cause.
