Hi everyone! Tim here from FDG

I know it has been a while since the last dev update, but a lot of work has been completed over the past few months. I'm going to break a few topics down, so let's go!

What happened to the upcoming demo???

Well, as mentioned in our last post, a demo for the game was in testing and that testing completed earlier this year. While, some elements of the game were great, there were some that just didn't hit the right notes. So, more time was taken, and the demo now feels like it's in great shape. There is a date in mind but I'm not going to drop it here. We will have another post and a brand-new trailer for that.

What held the demo up and how it has affected the plans for early access

In the interest of transparency though, I thought it might be good to break done one of the key things that was taken away from the first demo and how it has reshaped the plan moving forward for the early access release.

Story - So, in the previous demo, during the testing phase, one of the key complaints was that the player had no context for what the player's back story or circumstances are on this strange island.
You see, the original plans, were to keep most of the story content out of the demo, keep it to a minimum during early access, and drop it all at full release.

This plan would have been a mistake.

The narrative of this game comes with lots of twists, turns and depth. Not something every survival game has - nor do they need it, but it's a big part of this one. You are not just on an island to kill monsters. There is a mystery to solve and lots of adventure that comes with it. Robbing players of that experience would be a mistake. The story and lore in this game is a strength.
So, with that lesson in mind, the upcoming demo will feature the opening portion of the game and the story content with it.

With early access, the plan with be to periodically add the next chapter of the story into each major update - to a point. Certain elements will be held for full release, but you the player will go on this journey with us. Feedback on all of this will be very welcome.

Sooo, Co-op?

Yes, its still on the way! While the upcoming demo is a single player experience, co-op mode will be part of the early access launch later this year.

So, for now, this is it. I really want to thank you all for the patience and understand that silence from a dev can be frustrating. Appreciate you all. The next update will be coming very soon.

Is it possible to play the Dragons?

Hey! I just saw your trailer and I love the concept. I just wanted to ask if it´s possible to play as a Dragon or was it just for the Trailer to see the POV of one of those creatures? Thank you:)

Development update December 2024.

Hello!

First of all, thank you to all of you that have supported this game in 2024, it has been humbling and very motivating to see the enthusiasm for the game. We wish you all a great year ahead and a safe holiday season.

Okay, so for our last post of 2024, we thought it would be good to go over what we've been doing since our last update in September and give a bit of insight into where the game is in its development stage and what you can expect for the coming year.
Here we go!

In The Dragon's Wake - Demo

Since our last update, we've been hard at work on an upcoming demo for In The Dragon's Wake.
One of the challenges in creating a demo for an open-world survival game like ITDW has been in managing the scope and scale of the demo. The puzzles and progression in the full game is vast and some of the puzzles, temples and progression require the player to cross multiple biomes and areas to solve.
So, while the regions of the island featured in the demo are large (very large actually), some of the puzzles and resources have needed to be reconfigured and relocated in order to incorporate the experience into the demo. This work, alongside the regular bug fixes, quality of life improvements and optimization has taken some time and testing to get right.

In addition to this, we are in the midst of adding Co-op support to the game (more on this below) and have been hoping to integrate this into the demo. This has been the largest hold up in terms of releasing the demo. We will continue working into the new year and do our best to get this feature in. However, if the demo is going to be held up for too long, we may just release a single player version and update the demo once we are satisfied with the Co-Op experience. We will be sure to update the community on this as soon as we know.

Our play testing for the demo is currently underway and will hopefully conclude in early January. As for the demo release date, once the testing is completed and we are confident in the polish and quality we will set a date immediately and update the community.

We want you to get your hands on the demo as soon as possible. The feedback from the community will be invaluable in refining the game for early access release.

Co-Op play - What kind of experience is this?

So, as mentioned in previous posts, In The Dragon's Wake was always designed and intended to be a single-player focused survival game experience. One of our goals was to build a survival game that didn't have a punishing grind where you felt like you need a team just to make simple progress.

This is not changing. If it is a focused single-player experience you are looking for, that will not be altered.

However, as development progressed, it was clear there was a lot of fun to be had fighting monsters, evading dragons and solving the islands mysteries together.

So, a drop-in co-op PVE experience is underway. This has required a lot of back-end re-working of our gameplay systems and will take some time to complete and test thoroughly. However, we are aiming to have this feature in the game at early access launch.

Development Progress - Just how far along is this game?

As previously mentioned, ITDW was designed as a single-player experience. We are now 3 years into development on this game and the single player portion of the game is very far along! Our planned early-access period will be approximately a 12-months.

Truthfully, we have shown very little of this game so far.
While we will put out an updated trailer early next year, we really want the demo to be our best "first" impression. Some of the best parts of this game lie in the discovery of the world around you. There are many hidden areas, unusual creatures, interactions and even "Island behaviors" that we want you to discover on your own. With the intention of hopefully going a step beyond a typical survival game experience.

So, better or worse, we will save the best look at this game for all of you in the demo.
You, the players, are the best source of feedback and guidance. And, with that feedback from the demo, we will refine the early access experience and hopefully shape a game that is memorable, polished, and (if we do our job) worthy of your time.

We are not quite ready to talk about early access release dates, however we do have one in mind. It is not too far out; however, the demo feedback will ultimately determine how ready we are.
So, for now, the date will be announced after the feedback on the demo is considered, addressed and tested.

Development Update - September- Co-Op Plans and Demo Announcement

Hello to our awesome community members!

It has been a while since our last update! And we have been busy!
Since our last community post, we have completed a total overhaul of the islands many biomes, added 2 new explorable compounds, rebuilt our first-person animations system, upgraded our creature AI, and are currently in the midst of overhauling our creature animations. It has been - and continues to be - a busy time indeed.

While there is much to discuss, we are going to cover 2 main topics today. Both of which, we are asked frequently about - will there be a co-op mode, and will there be a demo?

We are excited to announce YES to both!

Co-Op Play - You don't have to outrun a dragon; you just have to outrun your friends

We are currently hard at work on a 4 player drop in co-op experience where your friends can join your adventure and help you survive the island's many challenges. Gather recourses, construct bases, solve puzzles, explore the ocean's depths, and uncover the mysterious temples together! And don't worry about the dragons - there is plenty of fire to go round.

Experience the upcoming Demo

While we are still confirming a date, we are currently working on the finishing touches of our upcoming demo. Experience several of the island's biomes and uncover their secrets as you hunt wildlife, combat monsters, solve puzzles, and play cat and mouse with the local dragon. We want this experience to be a great one, so this demo is absolutely packed with content and will be a great introduction to In The Dragon's Wake.
As soon as the date for the demo is a lock, we will be sure to update everyone here!

Looks cool. After watching that video though, if you leave out aiming down sights, it'll bomb your scores faster than ♥♥♥♥ performance would. Just saying. Good luck on development!
