The usual below-average review done by someone who doesn't have much of a clue about playing the game.
Did you even watch the preview? He's definitely familiar with the series. Just because he doesn't sound enthusiastic, doesn't mean he's ignorant. I find it refreshing that he's not fanboying all over.
It's a sequel.
It would be quite stupid of me to comment without watching it, wouldn't it?
So after "spending plenty of time with a pre-release version":
- the game is 2 years old, even the english version is 4 or 5 months old...
- use Cascade to take down transports? Yes, best weapon in the game anyway.
- using mortar to kill enemies with Fencer at more than close range? Yes, it's the best way to kill them
- a little explanation that the turrets are no longer on the AR but on Ranger could be useful but not
- Wing Divers are a bit weaker than their Godlike EDF 5 Incarnation? Oh boy... Genius. And yes she was much more powerful on EDF 4.1 too, no?
- the AR is with " a new playstyle as a wizard whose only spell is summon drones". Hilarious. He clearly hasn't played with them on hardest or Inferno.
- this makes the AR "much more powerful underground". Hilarious, only to kill himself, as turrets worked a lot better.
- laughs? The humor is mostly gone due to the excellent "story"
The only decent thing on the review is how he talks about the repetition, but confuses by talking about new enemies, which are not on the overwhelming number of repetitions (maybe 2 out of 30).
To finish. He shows no sheer mayhem gameplay. No harder difficulties (I bet he stops at normal). Nothing juicy, just crappy bland basic gameplay.
So yes, an expert, sorry.
I did not comment on the enthusiasm, but it's obvious...
And reviews should not be fanboyism, but present a decent overview and opinion of what they're reviewing. That's not what he did.
E: ... and the reason I asked that was because a video I saw had someone using the drones to shoot mortars as if it were an artillery call-in but it looked so laughably lackluster it was essentially useless. They were also using the drones to target a place for them to go out and shoot at. Overally they just seemed like something you'd use when you don't have access to the big guns I.E. underground missions.
On that front, how bad is this one about cutting things short or prolonging them for story beats in the missions? I feel like its one of the major reasons I didn't complete as much of 5 as I did 4/4.1.
There are fewer missions that get dragged out with boss fights. It won't be with regular kaiju because they wanted to emphasize them being strong, like Archie.
There are missions where stuff gets cut short because you are not alone in this and the Primers are always a step ahead.
EDF 1 and 2 are in the same universe, 3 and 4 are the same story remade, and 5 and 6 are the same story remade yet again. EDF 1 and 2 are Earth fighting Invaders (renamed "Buggernauts" in the west). 3 and 4 are against the Foreigners (renamed "Ravagers" in the west), and 5 and 6 are the war against the Immigrants (renamed"Primers" in all versions after Kotaku complained that it offended the west).
Either way, the result is that they are less enjoyable overall. Perhaps still better than in 4.1, but vehicles were also stronger in 4.1, so not sure entirely.
