Ending discussion, spoilers for entire series (e.g. steins;gate, chaos;head)
This is a paragraph so that the steam preview thing doesn't display any spoilers, as I will be spoiling not only this game but to a degree others in the series. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Mauris faucibus aliquam turpis id vehicula. Donec ut nunc odio. Duis tincidunt ligula sit amet semper imperdiet. Integer finibus libero vel elementum imperdiet. Praesent sollicitudin faucibus porta. Fusce non dui ut tortor suscipit molestie quis et neque. Maecenas et pretium tortor.

Alright, now the discussion. We learn in this game that this is a simulated universe inside a computer, and assumingly so are the previous games because that explains the divergence meter.

That's fine, it's an interesting sci-fi concept about 'do these people matter if they're simulated'. What does annoy me though, is that it seems like the ending of this game makes every other game in the series (that I've played) irrelevant. This is because in 2038 all of the simulations will sync back to the top layer, which means that everything that our protagonists struggled through never happened. The crazy epic journeys we watched them go through ended up not mattering because whether they succeeded or fails it comes to nothing in 2038 when the worlds sync up.

That really retroactively makes the previous games feel cheap and worthless.

Isn't this the same like Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0? With your logic Steins;Gate 0 is just irrelevant because those events will be erased when Okabe reaches Steins;Gate. But not, it's not irrelevant, because Okabe's struggles in 0 were needed to reach Steins;Gate.
The same way, the struggles of Okabe, Takumi, Takuru, Kaito and Gamon were needed to reach this far, to even solve the 2038 problem. Do you think the problem would've been solved if the world ends up in Beta, where the world is practically destroyed by WW3? Or in Alpha in a SERN dystopia?

I think those all probably happened in different layers with different bugs/exploits/parameters, and I don't know if they were above or below the layer of this game. But if they were above it you could argue that the simulations wouldn't be able to continue running if ♥♥♥♥ had gotten as bad as they could have which would mean that you're right, their victories were essential to even getting this far to enable them to fix the 2038 problem.

Well, Anonymous and Occultic;Nine (unseen in the West) are indeed a reboot of the franchise. About what you say, I feel further explanation is needed in extra games. It will probably start with the remake of Steins;Gate. Also you have to take into consideration the opening scene of original S;G, the thing about "you being inside the screen" that Okabe says. Breaking the fourth wall has always kind of been part of the series, as well as involving the player in the plot.

Maybe as early as original S;G they wanted to do this simulation thing. It pretty much explains the ludicrous superpowers, but the thing that really bugged me is the involvement of Christianity in the general plot that we see in Anonymous. Makes the Committee of 300 seem like cardboard villains. And without fail, they're always beaten by a bunch of teenagers.
