It would be more fair if you could map up to 12 separate keyboard keys, that way you could at least mash using all of your fingers, but I suspect Bamco will do ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it so if you don't have a controller your best bet is to look into external key mapping software.
Having the winner be determined by who can mash buttons the fastest and not who has the best sense of rhythm has been a problem in all modern Taiko installments. It gets a bit more tolerable once you reach A- rank and start playing on hard, since the timing thresholds are much more tighter there and you are less likely to have both players clear the song with perfect accuracy.
